New Trade: Long TripAdvisor ($TRIP) & Short OpenTable ($OPEN)

OpenTable is the type of stock that is incredibly scary to short but it does seem to have lost some of its momentum and feels like a good play at its current levels. The US-based online restaurant reservations firm OpenTable Inc has acquired Mumbai and Silicon Valley-based mobile payments startup JustChalo , run by JustChalo Technologies and JustChalo Inc, for around $11 million. “Mobile is increasingly important to our business and the JustChalo team’s expertise will help accelerate our development efforts in this area. We are looking forward to integrating JustChalo’s engineers into our team and continuing to enhance the mobile experience for diners and our restaurant customers,” said Joseph Essas, CTO of OpenTable in a statement. In the first quarter of 2013, reservations booked on mobile devices accounted for 36 per cent of the 34 million diners OpenTable seated in North America, as per its statement. Techcircle.in tried reaching JustChalo for more details, but did not get any response at the time of posting this article. JustChalo was co-founded by Kashyap Deorah and Rishi Deshpande. Prior to JustChalo, Deorah was president at FutureBazaar.com, an e-commerce portal of the Future Group. Earlier, he was CEO of Mumbai-based Phone Commerce, which was acquired by FutureBazaar and got merged with it. Recently, JustChalo secured undisclosed funding from Ash Bharadwaj and Rakesh Mathur. JustChalo , a mobile technology company focused on the US restaurant industry, has been acquired by US online restaurant reservations provider OpenTable in a stock-and-cash deal worth $11 million. JustChalo was founded by Kashyap Deorah and Rishi Deshpande. It has offices in Saratoga, California and Mumbai. Kashyap Deorah co-founded Righthalf, the first campus start-up as part of the IIT Bombay Business Incubator. Kashyap Deorah was also the president of Futurebazaar.com, the e-commerce arm of retailer Future Group. In 2007, he founded the phone commerce marketplace Chaupaati Bazaar, which merged with Futurebazaar.com in 2010. Kashyap Deorah quit FutureBaazar to start JustChalo in March this year. Post acquisition, Kashyap will move to Silicon Valley. Rishi Deshpande was on the founding team of VSee Lab in Mountain View CA and has also worked with Sony PlayStation’s R&D team . With projected revenue of $7 million this year and 100,000 monthly active users, EZTABLE is one of the top successes to have emerged from Taiwan’s young startup industry. Founded in 2008, the restaurant reservation platform is poised to launch in Southeast Asia and expand its presence in China. EZTABLE, which is already established in Shanghai, plans to rollout in other major Chinese cities, including Beijing, and Bangkok by the end of this year, before moving onward to Jakarta and other Southeast Asian cities in 2014. The company, which is backed by investors Rose Park Advisors , appWorks Ventures and NineYi Capital, is currently raising its Series B funding. CEO and founder Alex Chen says EZTABLE was inspired by his frequent use of OpenTable to make restaurant reservations while working as an investment banker at Deutsche Bank in Los Angeles. In order to adapt to the Taiwanese market, however, EZTABLE had to make some significant changes. “After two months of operating, I realized we needed an entire overhaul because managers in Asia want to see results before they pay.
