Source: www.functionalpathtrainingblog.com --- Wednesday, May 22, 2013
I have been fortunate in the time since the Olympic games to spend time with seven coaches of Gold medal winners in Athletics (Track & Field) from the London games. In two instances I got to watch workouts and spend significant time with the coach and athlete. These are the commonalities that all shared: Passion – In most cases they wore their passion on their sleeves. Technical Knowledge – They knew the basics and didn’t stray far from them. None of them made what they did overly complicated. Emotional Intelligence – They know their athletes and themselves. They listened to the athlete. Systematic – Nothing by chance, thorough plans, but still built flexibility into the system Humility – Not overly impressed with themselves, willing to credit others and seek help. Did not go it alone. Paid their dues – All except one has been coaching for quite some time; they were not always coaching gold medal winners. Interestingly enough these are the characteristics I see in great coaches at any level. These characteristics are what it takes to be an effective coach. ...

The 36-year-old sailor died yesterday after the 72-foot catamaran he was training on capsized in San Francisco Bay. Simpson won a gold medal for Great Britain in the Star Class competition at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, and he followed that with a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He was in San Francisco training with Team Artemis for the 2013 edition of the America’s Cup, the most prestigious sailing competition in the world, which will take place in September. Authorities said winds were a little stronger than usual in San Francisco Bay yesterday, but the cause of the capsize is still under investigation. Apparently the yacht had a few glitches after it launched last November, but it’s believed all of them had been ironed out. All that’s known for sure is that Simpson was trapped underneath the boat for a full 10 minutes before rescue workers were able to pull him from the water. Fortunately, no other members of the 13-person crew were seriously injured. However, that is absolutely no consolation for Simpson’s wife and child, and our hearts go out to them in this incredibly difficult time. Hat Tip – [ Guardian ] ...

Racing carbon fiber, 72 foot catamarans at 40 knots was the epitome of the sport of sailing. Besides Hydroptère , there’s isn’t much else that comes close to the speed and potential for catastrophic failure. Hence the reason why everyone on board wears helmets and personal flotation at all times. The safety precautions weren’t enough though and British double-Olympic Gold sailor Andrew “Bart” Simpson was killed today in a catastrophic capsize in San Francisco Bay. Simpson was one of the 11-man crew aboard Artemis Racing’s AC72 catamaran which capsized during training ahead of this summer’s America’s Cup. According to a statement my the sailing team, he became trapped underneath the boat and drowned. “The entire Artemis Racing team is devastated by what happened,” said CEO Paul Cayard. “Our heartfelt condolences are with Andrew’s wife and family.” Source ...

Below, she shares five tips to keep unstoppable families going: 1. I teach my kids that they can accomplish anything with practice and perseverance, which is the recurring theme in my two children’s books: “It’s a Big World, Little Pig” and “Dream Big, Little Pig.” 2. Mornings are an especially hectic time for my family, so I try to get as much done the night before as possible. I lay out outfits, pack book bags and duffel bags for after-school practices and pack lunches and snacks with Smucker’s Uncrustables reduced sugar peanut butter and grape spread sandwiches on whole wheat bread. Uncrustables sandwiches are perfectly portable and provide my girls with that homemade PB&J taste they love no matter where we are! 3. I also create a regular after-school routine for my children. When my girls get home from school or practice, they have a snack and then complete their homework for the next day. Not only does this help us stay focused on what needs to get done, but it also frees up the evening for quality family time. 4. The weekends are a particularly busy time for us. Between attending soccer games and dance recitals, there isn’t mu ...

Police appeal: have you been offered Olympic medal?

Source: www.hemeltoday.co.uk --- Wednesday, May 08, 2013
People are being asked to keep their eyes peeled for a 1948 London Olympics medal that was snatched during a break-in. The medal, which was given to all competitors taking part in the Games, was taken during a burglary in Wick Road, Wigginton. Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have been offered the medal for sale and also a wedding ring engraved with ‘Love Christiann’. The medal and ring were taken from the house between Saturday, April 27 and Monday, May 6, when offenders forced their way through a window. They also took several other items of jewellery. Assistant investigator Kevin Deudon, from the Hemel Hempstead local crime unit, said: “As well as being of great sentimental value to their owners, these items are unusual and distinctive. “If you have been offered them for sale recently or know anything about this burglary, I’d like to speak to you as soon as possible. You may have important information that helps us catch those responsible.” Herts Police can be contacted on the non-emergency number 101, quoting crime reference D3/13/222 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. ...

Evaluating the Olympic medal count

Source: humankinetics.me --- Wednesday, May 08, 2013
<img src="http://humankinetics.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/medal-ceremony1.jpg?w=137&h=150" & width="137" & height="150" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />The original Olympic ideal is one that sees individuals, not countries competing against each other in sport and peaceful competition without the burden of politics, religion, or racism. However it is now undoubtedly the case that the number of medals a country wins is seen as a true a measure of a nation´s sporting power. A new study published in the International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance looks at the recent trends in Olympic medal winning and why some countries are more successful than others. medal counts are the object of intense scrutiny after every Olympiad and most countries celebrate any medal with national glee, since 60% of competing countries will win none. At the 2012 London Games, 10% of the competing countries won 75% of all medals. Only a few countries such as the USA, China, Russia, Great Britain and Germany possess the combination of large population, diverse sports culture, rich economy, favorable seasonal conditions, national coaching expertise and well-developed facilities infrastructure to make themselves podium candidates in almost all Summer Olympics sports. Despite this concentration among a few countries, more nations are winning more medals now than 20 years ago, thanks in part to athlete-support and development programmes being introduced around the world. The differences in support infrastructure among the top 40 Olympic countries have also narrowed and in addition, some “sleeping g ...
