Michael Crabtree is expected to be out for a large part of the 2013 season after tearing his Achilles tendon in an organized team workout on Tuesday, reopening a hole the 49ers thought they filled after his breakout year last fall. The 49ers devoted the offseason last year to solving their receiver woes after squeezing a grand total of one catch for 3 yards out of the position in the 2012 NFC Championship Game. They brought in Randy Moss and Mario Manningham, while investing their first-round pick on A.J. Jenkins, an All-Big Ten Conference receiver out of Illinois. But Manningham tore his ACL, Moss proved to be past his prime and Jenkins didn’t catch a single ball all year. It didn’t matter, though, because Crabtree emerged as a legitimate go-to guy once Colin Kaepernick took the reins at quarterback. As the new-look 49ers’ offense took off, Crabtree finally lived up to the promise he showed before he was chosen with the 10th overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. The 49ers will miss Crabtree’s 85 catches, 1,105 yards and nine touchdowns, but the injury isn’t a deathblow to their Super Bowl aspirations by any means. Despite the loss, Kaepernick should have plenty of targets to hit. General manager Trent Baalke acquired Anquan Boldin in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens in March, and he’s more than capable of being ...

Track officials made the later-than-usual announcement in a news release sent out early Wednesday morning. In a statement released by track officials, the NFL coach called the opportunity a "tremendous thrill." Harbaugh has strong ties to the Indianapolis area. He played four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, where he earned the nickname "Captain Comeback," and is a part-time owner of Indianapolis-based Panther Racing. JR Hildebrand, who starts 10th, and Townsend Bell, who starts 22nd, both drive for Panther. Harbaugh led the 49ers to the NFC championship last season but lost in the Super Bowl to a Baltimore team coached by his brother, John. Harbaugh's brother-in-law is Indiana basketball coach Tom Crean. ...

Aaron Malone and I give you Volume No. 10. Trevor's Answers: Will the offense still let the play clock wind close to zero or does Kap get plays off quicker more consistently this year? #Channel49 — Daniel Weisz (@drweisz49) May 17, 2013 The 49ers' offense likes to win the time-of-possession battle, and winding the clock down close to zero helps accomplish that. With that said, there have been times (especially with Alex Smith) when the 49ers have taken way too long in getting to the line of scrimmage. I expect Colin Kaepernick to get plays off more quickly this year while having firm control in the huddle. With more experience, he’s only going to get better in this facet. #channel49 Would Mangini be a good fit with the Niners? — Elvin Pritchard (@ElvinPritchard) May 17, 2013 Eric Mangini could possibly become a consultant for the 49ers, and he would be a good fit in that capacity. It’s a position in which he really cannot hurt the continuity of the coaching staff or team morale; he’ll just be there to share some of his expertise. While Mangini was not a good head coach in the NFL, he was a good defensive backs coach/defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots. This is a move that can’t hurt the 49ers, and could potentially help them in a small way. He’s certainly qualified for the position. For teams that are going agains ...

There is a bunch formation there on the right side that could easily be a 2 TE set. Gore runs up the middle for catching. ...

We're going to have a hard time finding topics to discuss in the coming months, but that didn't stop people from participating in this weeks Q&A session. With Trevor Woods unavailable due to a strained oblique muscle, Malone had to step up his game. He tried not to disappoint. With so many more questions to answer, he'll get straight to the point. @ gafflezmalone #Channel49 can you see Justin signing with another team? I don't think he will run for the most money but you never know — chris vegas (@chrisaq79) May 11, 2013 With all of our young stars, their contract extensions and their futures garnering headlines this offseason, a lot of people are forgetting about the heart and soul of our defense, Justin Smith . His contract runs out after the 2013 campaign. He will turn 34 at the start of the season, which is old in defensive line years, and people are wondering what will happen with him after this year. He's such a great leader, mostly by example, that I would love for the 49ers to keep him. The front office has shown that they'll make the hard decisions when it comes to the good of the team so we may come face to face with the fact that they may choose not to re-sign him. Assuming he'd like to continue playing football, I'd like to see him remain a 49er . His disposition doesn't make me think he'd like to coach, though he'd have tons to teach. If we won the Super Bowl, it might be a ...

THE FORTY-NINERS AND THE DANGERS THEY FACED by CHARLIE STEEL

It is my intention to write three short pieces (to be published at three month intervals) outlining the events that took place in California regarding those people who will forever be known as the FORTY-Niners. Also, at the end of this narrative is a short piece explaining how California gold was formed from the earth’s crust and then concentrated over millions of years of erosion. (My book, THE FORTY-Niners, is to be published for the West of the Big River series by Western Fictioneers. It is to come out sometime in the future in digital format and as a trade paperback book.) Part 2 THE FORTY-Niners AND THE DANGERS THEY FACED Just imagine, word of a great gold discovery spreads across the eastern United States and very quickly around the world. The discovery of gold must be true, because President Polk said it in his speech and the papers reported it. Young and middle aged men, young fathers, farmers, clerks, students, those filled with the desire to change their lives, to change their destiny dropped everything and found money enough to start their journey. Most did not begin until six months after the announced discovery. For them all, no matter which route they took to the far away land on the Pacific Ocean, it took them nearly s ...
