Ahead of the Bell: Dow futures are trading down 105 points and S&P futures are trading down 14 points on worries the Federal Reserve could taper its stimulus program and Chinese growth fears. In testimony before congress yesterday, Fed Chairman, Ben Bernanke said the central bank could scale back the pace of its bond purchasing as early as June if economic momentum was maintained. According to a preliminary survey, the flash HSBC Purchasing Managers' Index showed China's factory activity fell for the first time in seven months which renewed fears the economic recovery has stalled, as the second largest economy in the world might be heading for a sharper cooldown. On the economic calendar today, jobless claims for the week ended 5/18 will be released before the market opens and 345K is expected, compared to 360K the week before. May PMI manufacturing data is due out before the market opens and 50.8 is forecasted, vs. 52.0 in April. The March house price index will also be released before the opening bell and a 0.9% increase is expected, vs. a 0.7% increase the month prior. After the market opens, April new home sales data is due out and 425K is expected, compared to 417K in March. The dollar is up against the Japanese yen and down against the euro and the British pound. Gold is trading at $1,387. Crude oil is currently trading at $93 a barrel. Anheuser-Busch InBev reported that profit increased slightly in the first quarter. Earnings rose 0.9 percent to $3.43 billion, excluding interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. However, the company missed first-quarter profit forecasts and lost market share. Earnings were below the lowest forecasts made by analysts. Anheuser-Busch is the currently world’s largest brewer. The company makes Budweiser, Stella and Beck’s, among other beverages. The company sold 4.1 percent less beer and other drinks compared with the same period last year. The company has struggled to weather a prolonged squeeze on consumer incomes in austerity-hit Europe and limited expansion in the United States. Anheuser-Busch reported declining sales in every region except Asia, where China was exceptionally strong. Many of the world’s top brewers are now relying on emerging markets for growth. The company also cut its sales forecast for Brazil, its second-biggest market where it has a two-thirds share. In the Brazilian beer market, consumers drank 8.2 percent less beer than a year ago. Rising food prices in the country are reducing the amount of money that consumers have to spend on beer. In March, Brazilian inflation accelerated to 6.59 percent, breaching the official target ceiling of 6.5 percent for the first time since November 2011. Earnings soared 53 percent in the quarter at Pfizer as the company benefited from a boost from a joint venture in China. However, the results fell short of Wall Street expectations. The company reported net income of $2.75 billion, or 38 cents a share, in the first quarter. This increased from $1.79 billion, or 28 cents a share, in the same period a year earlier. Pfizer took charges totaling $1.66 billion for litigation, acquisition and other costs in the year-ago quarter. Adjusted income was reported at 54 cents a share, excluding one-time items. This a penny less than the analysts forecast. Revenue was down 9 percent in the latest quarter, coming in at $13.5 billion from $14.89 billion a year earlier. This was below analysts’ expectations. The company also lowered its forecasts for the year. Pfizer reduced its earnings forecast by 6 cents to $2.14 to $2.24 a share and its revenue forecast by $900 million to $55.3 billion to $57.3. A $490 million gain from the transfer of product rights to its joint venture in China helped the company’s results.
