Updated 12:13 pm, Saturday, May 4, 2013 HOUSTON (AP) — The incoming leader of the National Rifle Association has a long history with the powerful gun rights lobby and a penchant for bold statements that are sure to enflame an already explosive national debate over gun control. [...] it lost ground in some places as several states passed laws expanding background checks and banning large ammunition magazines after December's mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school. Gun control advocates say Porter makes outgoing NRA President David Keene look like a moderate on gun issues, even though Keene had said the NRA would try to punish lawmakers who voted in favor of expanded background checks and other gun control measures. Keene had worked to offer a softer, if equally staunch voice for the gun lobby's ideas when compared with Wayne LaPierre, the fiery executive vice President who remains the NRA's most prominent voice on the public stage. ...

Your generosity in contributing to this nation’s civic and cultural life is so vast, we can never repay you. So we’re begging you to stop. No seriously, please stop. What’s that? You have one more gift to bestow upon America? Is it a pony? We love ponies! No? It’s this guy? Oh. Thanks. We love it. Do you by chance have the receipt? Why? Oh no reason, it’s just that we have so many stereotypical Southern fat-ass good ol’ boys working on marching us back to the nineteenth century (the first half anyway, because that was the better half) we couldn’t possibly find a use for another one. Everyone meet Jim Porter, the incoming President of the NRA. Maybe any Wonkers in Houston this weekend could pop over to the NRA convention and give him a big hello! While you’re there, maybe ask him if instead of focusing on making sure everyone in America has access to military assault weapons so we can fight off tyranny wh ...

Porter, who until this week was first vice President at the NRA and chairman of the group’s Legal Affairs Committee, will officially take over for David Keene at the group’s annual convention this weekend in Houston. The NRA’s executive vice President and CEO, Wayne LaPierre, has headed the organization since 1991, and has become a somewhat controversial but public face of the organization in recent months. It’s no surprise that Porter, whose father was an NRA President in the late 1950s, is well-versed in NRA doctrine, namely protecting 2nd Amendment rights at all costs. And anyone expecting the NRA to soften on assault weapons would be, well, deeply disappointed. Indeed, Porter , 64, has put it in crystal-clear terms: He believes the NRA was founded to teach civilians how to use military-style weapons in the Civil War era. “That was the very reason they started the national rifle association, was to teach and train the civilian in the use of the standard military firearm,” Porter said at the New York Rifle & Pistol Association’s Annual Meeting in 2012 . “And I am one who still feels very strongly that that is our greatest charges that we could have today i ...

Source: www.ringoffireradio.com --- Friday, May 03, 2013
The debacled circus-act that is the National Rifle Association has its new over-the-big top, ringmaster. Jim Porter, an Alabama attorney and slack-jawed son of former NRA President, Irvine Porter, is set to lead the clowns this coming Monday, reports CNN . Porter is the NRA’s current first vice President , previous second vice President and, in classic NRA style, is no stranger to right-wing conservative lunacy. NewsMatters.org reported Porter jabbering a slew of outrageous, gun-nutty hyperbole. Last June, at a New York Rifle and Pistol Association meeting, he threw around such erroneous claims, accusing Attorney General Eric Holder of “trying to kill the Second Amendment at the United Nations.” NewsMatters further reported that this demagogic attempt to rouse listeners at the New York meeting is Porter’s “blatant misrepresentation” of the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty. The treaty focuses, not on private ownership, but international arms trading. Porter is a self-touting Southerner, which isn’t bad in itself, but he does nothing for his southern upbringing except make it look like a gaggle of redneck jokes, punchline after back-wooded punchline. “Now y’all might call it the Civil War,” squawks Porter, woodenheaded, “”but we call it the ‘War of Northern Aggression’ down south.” By implying that he is speaking for all Southerners, Porter exudes an out-of-touch perception of the whole country at large and boasts a misplaced sense ...
