Hockey fans flocked to the NHL despite lockout

Source: www.newstalk770.com --- Wednesday, May 08, 2013
A new survey says Canadians have largely forgotten about their vow to wash their hands of the NHL during the recent Lockout. In September of last year, over half of Canadians said they had no interest in the NHL due to the Lockout. One thousand hockey fans were surveyed as the playoffs approached. The data showed a much different picture with as many as 80 per cent saying they will be following the playoffs. Andrew Enns from the Energy Group says the excitement of the short season may have played a role in the attitude reversal. He says fans got immersed in a hurry, while the quality of hockey was good right off the bat. Enns says he used Stats Canada population numbers in the survey to mimic population distribution in the country. He admits that the respondents were more likely to embrace the game in areas where regional teams were playoff bound, and less favorable in Alberta. ...

What lockout? All seems forgiven as league preps for NHL playoffs

Source: www.mediamiser.com --- Tuesday, April 23, 2013
<img src="http://mediamiser.com/wp-system/uploads/2013/04/GameCenter-300x260.jpg" & width="150" & height="130" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />As we head down the home stretch of this shortened NHL season, it’s apparent that the NHL and the players/NHLPA maybe did listen to their fans after all. It would be an understatement to say that the NHL’s owners and NHLPA alienated the league’s fan base during the Lockout. As we read and saw in media reports at the time , there was a real danger to both the league and its players of losing many of the NHL’s most loyal fans. Most of MediaMiser’s analysis during the Lockout showed that a large chunk of the outrage was targeted at the perceived greed of both the owners and the players – the billionaires vs. millionaires theme. And in regard to this point, the NHL and its players seemed eventually to ‘get it.’ Subscriptions to NHL GameCenter Live almost doubled this year, after the NHL discounted the service by more than half price. Many players reached out to fans to rehabilitate their public image and, maybe more importantly, the owners went about trying to make things right through giveaways and deep discounts . Fans were upset that players and owners spent so much time squabbling over who got the bigger slice of their hard-earned cash. And on this point, as well, the NHL seemed eventually to get it. When the Lockout ended Commissioner Gary Bettman offered an apology to the league’s fans, but for most it seemed to ring hollow. Rather, sincerity came in the form of delivering a product at a price that encouraged fans to forgive an ...

Shane Doan is Happy the NHL Lockout is Over But Fears Physical Play Will Suffer

Source: phoenix.fanster.com --- Tuesday, January 08, 2013
<img src="http://phoenix.fanster.com/wp-content/blogs.dir//HLIC/f7f6e5166f7b5bdc9a4c5346ae51f91a.jpg" & width="150" & height="110" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />Just when it appeared there was absolutely no chance that we’d see NHL games this year, the two sides struck a tentative deal to end the Lockout over the weekend. If and when the deal is finalized, it sounds like we could be seeing games very quickly, which may sound great to fans, but Phoenix Coyotes’ Shane Doan worries what the physical play will be like for players who have been away from the ice. Shane Doan joined KTAR in Phoenix with Doug and Wolf to discuss the difficulty of the Lockout, the deal not getting done sooner, what has been tarnished by the Lockout, if the players thought they’d be playing games this year and his expectations on the quality of play once games start up. How difficult was this Lockout for you?: “As a player, you work your whole life and give up everything you can and sacrifice a lot to … play for the NHL. Right or wrong, you take pride in that when you accomplish that and you’re very proud to say, ‘I’m a member of that.’ During the Lockout, it’s tarnished, and it bothers you. It bothers you that you’ve worked so hard to achieve something that’s being tarnished. I think it’s good that it’s over and we can move on and forget about it, because it eats at you.” Did you look at the deal as a success or maybe question why something like this wasn’t agreed to months ago?: “I think there was a deal where everyone thought it was going to end up and it’s probably close to what it is right now. And we accepte ...
