But how the 54-year-old Calipari started off the segment — when prodded if he thinks Cleveland would be making a mistake if they don’t pick former Wildcat Nerlens Noel No. 1 overall — stood out the most: “Chris Grant and his crew are the most thorough people that I’ve seen,” he said. “No disrespect to anyone else in the league, all I know is I’ve seen Chris’ face more in my gym than any other GM, guys that are making the decision. So, if he picks my guy, my hope is he picks him, which means he’s the No. 1 guy because they don’t make many mistakes. When you go back to Tristan [Thompson], everybody says, ‘What are they doing? It turns that out Kobe Bryant got to be a part of the 2013 NBA playoffs after all. And look, so did Todd MacCulloch ! Fans of the Los Angeles Lakers (and Bryant himself, no doubt) would have probably preferred to see No. 24 participate in actual games rather than be featured in a commercial commemorating the snoozefest that was the 2002 NBA Finals. Still, it's a pretty cool dunk. And even though that freeze-the-shot-and-pan-around style of cinematography hasn't been particularly novel since The Matrix came out, it does make it easier to appreciate the hops Bryant possessed in bygone days. The NBA announced Friday that Grizzlies guard Tony Allen has been fined $5,000 for flopping during a 93-89 loss to the Spurs in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals on May 21. Allen becomes the fourth player fined under the league’s stiffer postseason policy , which eliminated the free warning given during the regular season and assesses escalating fines for each subsequent offense. During the regular season, 19 players were warned for flopping and five of those received fines for a second offense. Knicks guard J.R. Smith , Pacers forward Jeff Pendergraph and Thunder guard Derek Fisher have also been fined during the postseason. With a little less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation, Zach Randolph came up with the loose ball after a Spurs turnover and tossed it ahead to Allen, who had already leaked out behind Manu Ginobili and had a clear path to the basket. Rather than concede the lay-up, Ginobili yanked Allen’s left forearm, preventing the conclusion of a shot attempt and sending the All-Defensive First Teamer crashing to the court. There, Allen rolled around and held his head, even though replays indicated that he didn’t hit his head on the court. The referees ruled that Ginobili was guilty of a flagrant foul 1 on the play, awarding Allen two shots and giving possession to the Grizzlies ball. ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — One of my favorite descriptions of all time came a few years ago, back when NBA TV’s Steve Smith was calling Hawks games on Atlanta-area TV. The Hawks were playing the Chicago Bulls, and Bulls center Joakim Noah got fouled and sent to the free throw line. Noah stepped to the stripe, took a deep breath and then … well, he didn’t shoot the ball so much as he kind of launched it, with both hands, with sideways spin, toward the rim. The Hawks’ announcers were taken aback, and then Smitty said Noah shot like he had a charley horse in his chest. The thing is, Smitty was correct. Noah shoots the ball in such a way that if you displayed similar form at basketball camp, they would promptly refund your money and send you home. But it works for Noah, and he’s managed to be effective enough with it that no coach has seen the need to fundamentally change it. Noah, however, is not the only NBA player with nontraditional form. Shawn Marion immediately comes to mind — I once asked Marion where he developed his strange release, and he said it was because he jumped so high that he was basically shooting down at the rim.
