CANDOR, N.C. — State troopers say a retired Southern Pines police officer died over the weekend after he crashed his Motorcycle during a charity ride in Montgomery County. According to Trooper D.J. Billingsley, 57-year-old Stanley Klingenschmidt of Pinehurst died as a result of the single-vehicle wreck, which happened shortly before 10:45 a.m. Saturday on Capelsie Road in Candor Billingsley says Klingenschmidt was coming out of a left curve when he went off the right shoulder of the roadway and down an embankment. The Motorcycle then struck a fence, at which point Klingenschmidt was thrown into the fence, he said. Klingenschmidt was riding at an estimated 65 mph, Billingsley said. The speed limit along the stretch of road is 55 mph. Billingsley says Klingenschmidt was serving as the road captain for a charity ride that was to benefit the Special Olympics of North Carolina. As road captain, Billingsley says it was Klingenschmidt’s responsibility to ride ahead of the other motorcyclists in order to secure major intersections so they could safely pass as a group. The route of the ride was altered due to debris from storms from the previous night, Billingsley said. Ride organizers checked the route prior to the Crash, but Klingenschmidt may have forgotten how sharp the particular curve was, he added. The Highway Patrol has identified the man who died in a Motorcycle wreck Tuesday night in Carteret County. Antonio Rodrigues, 64, of Newport died in the Motorcycle Crash that occurred about 6:15 p.m. on U.S. 70 near the Carteret County-Craven County line, according to the patrol office in Morehead City.
