Cleveland Browns general manager Mike Lombardi is a long time friend and admirer of New England Patriots coach, Bill Belichick. He also like the quarterbacks Belichick chooses, he expressed a lot of interest in backup Ryan Mallet before the 2013 NFL Draft, and while he couldn’t land the former Arkansas product, he did grab an ex-Patriots QB that could give both signal callers on the roster a run for their money for the starters position. Brian Hoyer was thought highly of in the Patriots organization, however, entering his final year of his contract and the drafting of Mallet, both sides felt he could get a better opportunity with another team. Hoyer made a few rounds with other NFL teams (Pittsburgh, Arizona) but the Browns is a legitimate opportunity for Hoyer and the team. Cleveland Browns general manager Mike Lombardi doesn’t want to take his time rebuild the team, he wants to win now. He can feel the pressure from the fans that haven’t had a playoff caliber team in over ten years. Lombardi wasn’t a popular choice when CEO Joe Tanner selected him to be in charge of personnel, and he feels the pressure from his first stint in Cleveland that didn’t produce great results. However, Lombardi has been defiant in the face of the lack of confidence the fans have shown. With the NFL Draft officially in the books, fans have begun to see and read draft grades being discussed by many media outlets and draft analysts nationwide. Many haven't portrayed the Browns draft in a positive fashion and after trading out of the 4 th and 5 th rounds some fans were left scratching their heads and feeling that frustrating, "here we go again" feeling. Then, yesterday, after all the silence leading up to the draft, I'm sure a few of you were wondering why Mike Lombardi suddenly came out of the woodwork for interviews? Well, for one, yesterday was the first day 92.3FM The Fan and 850AM WKNR took over as the radio home of the Browns, subsequently ending WTAM's relationship with the team. Then, I believe this was done for public relations in an attempt to help the Cleveland Browns fan base be "in the know" about the direction and philosophy of the organization and the most recent NFL Draft as well as get a chance to really know Mike Lombardi a little better. And aside from the fact that I walked away very impressed with the man; his humor and ability to handle the goofballs on 92.3; and his intelligence, I can sum up the organizational philosophy discussed in these interviews in one word: "Value".
