Remember Michael Chandler? The 6-foot-10 big man out of Indianapolis (Ind.) Lawrence North was the No. 5 center in the Class of 2011 and committed to three different schools – Louisville, Xavier and Central Florida — before being deemed academically ineligible by the NCAA . Chandler has resurfaced at Northwest Florida State where he is playing for coach Steve Forbes, the former Tennessee assistant, and alongside Louisville-bound point guard Chris Jones. This week Chandler visited Purdue and he enjoyed it. “He loved it,” his uncle, Allan Chandler, told SNY.tv. “The coaches, the school, the facilities, the style of play and the proximity to home.” Chandler averaged 4.6 points and 2.4 rebounds in 34 games at NWF, but had several breakout games. He went for 16 points and six rebounds in a win over Chipola, 12 and four against Tallahassee and 15 and eight against Gulf Coast. The anticipated lightweight title fight between current champion Michael Chandler (11-0) and Dave Jansen will not take place on June 19 as planned. Bellator informed media on Sunday afternoon that Jansen has a torn ACL and will not be able to compete for the title. Chandler will instead face Season 8 Lightweight Tournament Champion David Rickels (14-1) July 31 st from The Santa Ana Star Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Rickels won the season eight tournament and will now battle the undefeated Chandler for the title, but the bout will take place on the July 30 card. Last season, Rickels defeated Lloyd Woodward, Jason Fischer and Saad Awad to become the lightweight tournament champion. “I’m already back in the gym getting ready for the biggest test of my career,” Rickels said. “I was prepared for another few months off with Jansen already in line for his title shot, but when I got the news I was pumped because I got to enjoy myself for a while after the tournament, but now I’m ready to fight for that belt. Chandler is going to bring a huge challenge, but I know I need to focus on my takedown defense, and just push the pace. I’ve got to hurt Mike early, let him know I’m not playing around. I think he fights off of confidence more than anything else, so I’m looking to put a lot of doubt into his head early in this fight. The injury monster is hard at work trying to make sure that no quality MMA fights will actually happen in the summer time. Earlier today we told you about Antonio Rogerio Nogueira's reported back injury, which will keep him out of the UFC 161 co-main event vs. Mauricio Rua , and now we've got some bad news coming out of Bellator. Season 7 lightweight tournament winner Dave Jansen is out of his title fight against champion Michael Chandler , which was scheduled for June 19th at Bellator 96. As a result, season 8 winner David Rickels will get his title shot a little quicker than anticipated. MMA Junkie reports that Rickels will fight Chandler at Bellator 97 to end July, bolstering that card while weakening Bellator 96. Rickels (14-1) completed his tournament triumph by knocking out Saad Awad at Bellator 94 in Florida. It was Rickels' first crack at the lightweight tourney after losing in the semifinals of the Bellator season 6 welterweight tournament. Chandler (11-0) famously submitted Eddie Alvarez at Bellator 58 to win the lightweight belt, but he's only defended his belt once since his November 2011 victory. The 27-year-old choked out Rick Hawn earlier this year for his first successful title defense. Bellator 97 now boasts the following fights: Chandler/Rickels, Ben Askren / Andrey Koreshkov , Ben Saunders / Douglas Lima , and Patricio Freire / Rob Emerson .
