Metro Vancouver remains opposed to coal shipments

Chair Heather Deal says they have amended, slightly, the original motion that stated opposition in April. "There was wording in the report today that actually amended that to expressing ‘concern’ instead of expressing ‘opposition.’" But at the end of the day, Deal says the spirit of the original motion stays as is. "What happened is that we have maintained the position of opposition." She says the committee is concerned about coal dust. "Unless they are covered cars, the coal jostles around and breaks up as it travels and continually emits dust." The motion can still be overturned by the Metro Vancouver board. The CEO Surrey Fraser Docks made a presentation to the committee today, and pledges to move ahead with his bid to ship coal arriving by rail from the U.S. and then sent down the Fraser by barge. Jeff scot says they have processes in place to deal with coal dust. Scott says having the Metro environment committee oppose the idea is just part of the process. "As far as we are concerned, we are going to continue with our public consultation, our phase two consultation. We are going to have the open houses in May on the 23 rd and 25 th and we are going to continue to reach out to the public and hear their concerns and consider t ...

Merging onto the Knight Street Bridge, most drivers turn on their signals and merge once more to avoid the Mitchell Island offramp that comes up just after the first span. Most often you’ll find trucks using that exit though, as Mitchell Island has steel and electronics recycling plants, scaffold supply, ready-mix concrete, auto recycling, and welding shops. On the flip side of this rough-and-tumble industrial land is its agricultural history. The island was once the home of the area’s first successful pioneer farmer: Alexander Mitchell . View Larger Map 1972: Heritage Vancouver on Flickr Alexander Mitchell, after whom Mitchell Island is named, arrived in BC in April of 1877. He settled in Moodyville (part of present day North Vancouver) with his wife and children, and later took squatter’s rights as a pioneer resident on the small Richmond island. He then purchased the 330-acre property for $10 and built a pioneer homestead for his family. The two previous surveys were conducted by UBC professor, Dr. Walter G. Hardwick, through face-to-face and telephone interviews. This latest survey, led by Dr. Hardwick’s daughter, was conducted online using PlaceSpeak. “PlaceSpeak was developed as a means to conduct location-specific research on ...

Stuart Morrison, executive vice-president of Colliers International, said the “vertical development of industrial space” is already being rejected by users, noting it’s been a challenge to lease facilities such as a two-level warehouse on New Westminster’s Braid Street. ...

The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives says the living wage is the combined hourly rate two parents must earn to pay for basic family expenses, such as rent, child care, food and transportation. And that's after taxes and other deductions. This year's wage is up 48 cents from last year, almost double Vancouver’s inflation rate. The centre and other groups are reiterating their call to B.C.’s employers to pay wages that reflect the actual costs of living, as well as to the next provincial government to take action against child poverty, such as adding more social housing or creating a publicly funded daycare system. ...
