NASCAR’s Matt Kenseth crushed the opposition to win the first quarter DRIVER OF THE YEAR AWARD 2013. The 2003 Sprint Cup Champion scored twice the points of his nearest rivals in a vote by an elite panel of American broadcasters and journalists In racing terms Kenseth rolled off the hauler quickly in his first season with Joe Gibbs Racing. In the first quarter ending May 12th he scored three wins (Las Vegas, Kansas and Darlington), two poles and led 781 laps. Owner Jack Roush lamented the loss of Matt Kenseth to what he called "the dark side" of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Others thought perhaps Kenseth, who turned 41 in March, was making a mistake by leaving the comfort of a 14-year association with Roush for the uncertainty of a new gig this late in the game. And for Joe Gibbs Racing , there were doubters who theorized that perhaps they were cashing in a young driver in Joey Logano who was finally on the verge of paying dividends for another in Kenseth whose tank might be closer to running on empty. Well, for those who wondered if Kenseth and JGR were making the right move last year by agreeing to team up for 2013 and beyond, wonder no more. Kenseth passed JGR teammate Kyle Busch with 13 laps to go and went on to capture his first Southern 500 last Saturday night, then rightfully gushed in Victory Lane about how much the win meant to him. Matt Kenseth captured the win in what was a dominate night for Joe Gibbs Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Bojangles Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. Kyle Busch dominated the majority of the race but a cut right rear tire on the last run of the night would leave him back in sixth, while Denny Hamlin returned to lead the 11 team to a second-place finish. Kenseth started his No. 20 Home Depot Husky Toyota from the seventh position and was able to drive into the top five and settle into third on the night’s opening run despite battling some loose handling conditions with his racecar. Shortly after the first round of green flag pit stops Kenseth would drive his way up to second behind his teammate Kyle Busch. The two teammates would hold those spots until a round of green flag stops just prior to the midpoint of the race. Kenseth would cycle through fourth following the stops and continued to hold that position with 100 laps to go. A caution with 66 laps to go would bring him down pit road again for four tires and fuel and Kenseth would remain fourth for the restart. He would get a great restart to jump into second behind Busch once again. A caution with 39 laps remaining would have Kenseth set to restart fourth with 35 laps remaining.
