USC Football: Analyzing What Makes Marqise Lee so Special

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Wednesday, May 22, 2013
Marqise Lee is the best wide receiver in college football and it's not even close. Never mind all of the individual awards and the records he continues to break, Lee is a special player who has a bright future once he finishes school (or leaves early, of course). Lee is a game-changer and widely considered the top NFL prospect at his position. But what makes him stand out when there are so many great receivers? How is there such a wide gap between Lee and the rest of the pack? The USC receiver does a lot of things correctly, but there are two things that truly put him in a class of his own. Plays Bigger Than He Is Lee looks like he is 6'4" when out there on the football field. The truth is that he is small receiver at 6'0" according to his USC bio , while ESPN lists him at 6'1". Whatever height you want to go with, Lee is considered small by NFL standards and many scouts are going to have a hard time imagining him as a true No. 1 option on the outside. Lee seems like he is the perfect fit to play on the inside just off of his size alone. The tricky part is that Lee doesn't play like a small receiver. That size is a little difficult to believe. It is a lot like speed with football players. Some guys don't produce a blazing 40-yard dash time, but seem a lot faster once they put the pads on. That's Lee when it comes to size. He is small on the field, but anybody that has tried to cover him would tell you otherwise. Lee high point ...

Is Marqise Lee or Sammy Watkins Best WR Threat to Win 2013 Heisman?

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Thursday, May 09, 2013
If a wide receiver is going to win the 2013 Heisman Trophy , it will likely be Marqise Lee or Sammy Watkins. Both terrific players and offensive game-changers, they put up the eye-popping numbers and should be even better as they enter their junior seasons. Now the question is: Who is the best bet to win the award? The answer is Lee without hesitation. The engine that makes that USC offense go, Lee was the reason the Trojans season wasn't a complete failure and the team at least qualified for a bowl game. Although Watkins is fun to watch and great in his own right, Lee is a completely different animal. Lee Is Cut from a Different Cloth Before you can begin talking about these receivers as a Heisman candidate, it is important to know just how great Lee actually is. Leading the country last year with 118 receptions, finishing second with 1,405 yards and tied for third with 14 touchdowns, Lee is one of the best receivers this sport has seen in the last 10 years. Stanford head coach David Shaw said Lee is the best receiver he has seen since Randy Moss. While it is too soon to start building statues and throwing him into the Hall of Fame, Lee does have that type of potential. This is why Mel Kiper Jr . of ESPN considers him the third best player on his 2014 NFL draft big board. Some would say Watkins is the best big-play receiver and is the most dangerous in the open field. Think again. While Lee plays bigger and has more leaping a ...

2014 NFL Draft: Pre-season Break Down of Marqise Lee, WR USC

Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports From the moment he stepped foot on USC’s campus, Marqise Lee has been special. From his first catch against Minnesota to his first touchdown against Syracuse , the question has been when, not if Lee would be a superstar in college football. And from the second he stepped on campus, there have been people counting the days until he would be in the NFL. After 191 catches, 2,864 yards 27 touchdowns in his first two years, it is hard to imagine he could actually do even more as a junior. He will have to adjust to not having Matt Barkley there anymore as his quarterback and adjust to the new quarterback guiding the Trojan offense. Lee’s stats are slightly inflated due to the number of bubble screens USC runs, but he is still averaging 15 yards per catch, which is incredibly high, especially when all of those screens are taken into account. Behind the line, in the middle of the field or going deep down the field, Lee is a big time playmaker and always a threat to score. He is a tremendous ball carrier and attacks defenses as if he is a running back and has an extremely aggressive mindset in everything he does from carrying the football to blocking. It would not be a surprise to see Lee dinged slightly just as his teammate Robert Wo ...

Is Marqise Lee Truly the Next Randy Moss?

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Friday, April 26, 2013
After a disappointing 7-6 finish in 2012, wide receiver Marquise Lee is setting up himself to be the hottest thing west of the Mississippi. But can he back it up, or is it just hype? After all, we did all get burned for thinking that USC could take the national championship from the SEC last season. Or, at least all of us who believed the 2012 preseason AP poll. Regardless, Lee has already got us talking when he said that his goal was to not to drop a single pass this season . Sounds to me like BYU's disastrous "Quest for Perfection" T-shirts. Seriously, I don't think that Lee, nor anyone else for that matter, thinks that Lee will catch every pass thrown his way. If he did, I'd be suspicious of some sort of sticky substance on his hands. However, 1,721 yards receiving on 118 receptions and 14 touchdowns in 2012 is nothing to sneer at. Lee finished No. 2 in the country last season in receiving yards, just behind Baylor's Terrance Williams. Arizona still has nightmares about Lee as he picked up 345 yards and two touchdowns against the Wildcats alone. Bryan Fischer, Senior Correspondent for Pac -12 Digital, tweeted that Stanford head coach David Shaw said this about Lee: Stanford's David Shaw on USC WR Marqise Lee: Best wide receiver he's seen since scouting Randy Moss . — Bryan Fischer (@BryanDFischer) November 6, 2012 That's high praise for sure, but is it a valid comparison? Lee ran a speedy 4.62 40-yard dash time out of high ...
