Source: www.huffingtonpost.com --- Wednesday, June 19, 2013
WASHINGTON -- Erin Konkel traveled from Houston, Texas, to go to a daylong tea party rally on immigration reform Wednesday in front of the Capitol, where she held up a handmade sign for more than an hour. "Rubio CONSERVATIVE RINO," it read, or Republican In Name Only. She used to be a fan of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), who is now pushing a comprehensive immigration bill in the Senate with the so-called gang of eight. Konkel, as a Texan, is concerned about the border, and she is deeply opposed to the gang of eight bill. By supporting it, Rubio seemed to be going against the views of those who voted him into office, she said. "I believed in him," she said of Rubio. "I thought he was the real deal, but I was wrong." The gang of eight bill would provide a path to citizenship for some of the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the U.S., while also requiring increased border enforcement and a streamlined legal immigration system. Rubio's work on immigration reform won't necessarily damage his chances for a presidential run in 2016, according to conservative observers. Still, many conservatives at two tea party rallies on Wednesday were disappointed with Rubio. When Robert Rector, a senior research fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation, took to the stage with Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) to decry the gang of eight bill, the crowd booed loudly for Rubio in particular. "No matter what Marco Rubio says -- w ...

Source: www.washingtonpost.com --- Wednesday, June 19, 2013
The tea party returned to Capitol Hill on Wednesday, but this time the don’t-tread-on-me crowd trod upon one of its own. Much of the scene was familiar: the yellow flags, the banners protesting tyranny and socialism, the demands to impeach President Obama and to repeal Obamacare. But there was a new target of the conservatives’ ire: Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and his “amnesty” plan for illegal immigrants. The loathing of this one-time darling of the movement — Rubio rode the tea party wave to office in 2010 — could be seen in the homemade signs on the East Lawn of the Capitol proclaiming, “Rubio RINO” (Republican In Name Only) and “Rubio Lies, Americans Die.” Rubio antagonism became a main theme of the event, held by Republican Reps. Steve King (Iowa), Louie Gohmert (Tex.), Michele Bachmann (Minn.) and other opponents of the bipartisan Senate immigration legislation that Rubio negotiated. (I’ve) known him for a long time. He was a good Speaker of the House (in Florida). He’s not ready to be president any more than Barack Obama was ready to be president, Scarborough tells The Brody File. And as for Senator Rand Paul? “He’s not ready to be president and he’s not going to appeal to those swing voters I’m talking about.” Scarborough told me later in the interview he’s a big fan of Jeb Bush. The Brody File recently spoke with Scarborough on the set of his popular morning show. We not only talked on the set but also visited his office at 30 Rock where he shared some personal stories as well. You can watch the national profile story on Joe Scarborough that aired on The 700 Club here . Scarborough's comments (especially about Rand Paul) convey the schism within the GOP right now. Can a candidate like Rand Paul break out of his father's shadow and reputation as a Libertarian and appeal to a broader base of swing voters in this country? So far, Senator Paul has shown a smart, agile side to his politics, an attempt to take his principles and make them attractive to a wider swath of the electorate.
