For close readers, a good number of the points are already well-familiar – Papa Francesco tends to recycle content far more eagerly and often than his predecessors, but does so that the message might be unmistakable and impossible to avoid. Still, in a 38-minute, mostly off-the-cuff response to several questions put to him – a nod to the teaching format in which his predecessor famously shone – starting from his own conversion story, Jorge Bergoglio laid out the full spread of his impressions on the state of the church, and his vision for the road ahead, tying together in the process the threads which have marked his two months on Peter's chair. Even if English summaries of the talk are around, these last ten weeks should've already made more than clear that the magic or "secret" of Francis isn't something that can be fully, nor even duly, communicated in the printed word. Whether we’ve faced personal transformations through our daily lives, or we’ve used our art as a form of expression or messaging, we’ve witness some sort of shift. Some of us may have identified with others to create collaborative change or put our efforts in areas we saw fit so we could redefine our truths and beliefs. Whatever that shift has been, we are now becoming more aware of this energy. Little has been edifying about the process, right up to and including a Conservative Prime Minister overcoming the opposition of a substantial number of his own party through a coalition with the Liberals and Labour, all falling over one another to be as 'inclusive' as possible. With all the major political parties backing the Same-Sex Marriage Bill it is tempting to say, ‘A plague on all their houses’ and disengage entirely from the political process. But none of these parties were exactly offering a shining defence of marriage even before the SSM Bill anyway. Whether it is the ‘family-friendly’ Tories failing to offer transferable tax allowances for married couples or support for stay-at-home mums (and continuing to allow 200,000 abortions to be carried out each year in the UK); senior Liberals making dodgy expense claims on behalf of their boyfriends (David Laws) or manipulating their wives into illegal actions (Chris Huhne); or a Labour leader who was ‘too busy’ to marry his pregnant girlfriend, or be named on his son’s birth certificate – none of them have anything to teach us about marriage. It is hardly surprising that such a class of people ...

Whether or not he actually did post the Theses (of course there is historical debate) and what that generated are off-topic, but the action of pinning your colors to a statement of beliefs for all the world to see lies at the core of building and articulating an opinionated brand. Brands build trust through behaviors. And behaviors should be based on clear principles. Those principles should bring your purpose to life by laying out the clear psychological guidelines within which your brand operates. They are, when done well, an inspiring précis of your organization’s worldview. Martin Lindstrom made the brand case for opinion for me in this post several years ago when he wrote: “The fact is that consumers are tiring of perfectly polished brands. Inoffensive brands. … Brands without well-defined opinions will find it increasingly difficult to gain traction in the market place. The challenge is to ensure that the opinions are in tune with the core values of the brand. That they are authentic, and not an opportunistic and superficial play for attention by deception.” Diesel’s famous “Be Stupid” is one of my all-time favorites. It’s a wonderful mix of observation, grace, defiance, sarcasm, insight and counter-intuition that lays out Diesel’s anti-smart stance, including ...

During that time, I have interviewed countless couples about their weddings. I’ve interviewed couples with big budgets. Couples with little budgets . Couples from big cities, and others from tiny towns. Brides who have dreamed of their weddings their entire lives, and others who didn’t even have marriage on the radar screen. I finally decided it was time to put down in writing what I have learned during this decade of dedication to all things wedding. I hope these words resonate with you. I hope they will serve as a reminder for you to stay grounded and keep your eyes on the prize; marrying the love of your life. You can get the 8.5″ x 11″ printable version of The Bride’s Manifesto here . Place it on your desk or beside your bed; it will help ward off the wedding crazies. The post The Bride’s Manifesto appeared first on Intimate Weddings - Small Wedding Blog - DIY Wedding Ideas for Small and Intimate Weddings - Real Small Weddings . ...

(Spoilers) May 17 2013 Though rare, letters sent to prisoners of war are usually scrubbed clean of any potentially helpful information and sterilized, so to speak, prior to being delivered to the captive soldiers. A useful message may make it through if it is targeted to just the right people and disguised or coded well enough to evade detection. Many of our men and women in the armed forces are stuck doing a job that they know to be morally deficient and an unjust expense of American treasure, blood and goodwill. They are, however, bound by their oath and service commitment to continue to follow the orders of their superiors - to see the mission through. In many cases, their superiors are stuck in the same position - having to execute a mission that they have no faith in and see as a betrayal of conscience. They are all in effect Prisoners of War. I am one of them. If you pay close attention to JJ Abrams newest Star Trek film you will note that he dedicates it to the men and women who have fought and sacrificed in the armed services since 9/11. Not to the victims of the attacks - to the soldiers who have carried out the response. You see Star Trek Into Darkness is a film that contains encoded messages telling these captive men and women of conscience that there is a path to redemption. The most visible example is the discussion between Kirk and Spock ...

The truth about Nick Clegg's manifesto referendum pledge - and how he is breaking it

Their most awkward moment came as their leader stood in for the Prime Minister at PMQs. Veteran eurosceptic Edward Leigh brandished a Lib Dem leaflet from 2008, asking whether the person claiming to be Nick Clegg who promised "a real referendum on Europe" was "an imposter or a hypocrite"? At the time, this was a pledge Clegg felt strongly about - going to the point of trooping his MPs out of the Commons when the Speaker rejected an amendment proposing an EU referendum. Obviously his position has changed, and he now seems dedicated to stopping the people getting a say. The Deputy PM's standard get-out nowadays is to point to his party's 2010 Manifesto (with no justification for the change in policy since then). It said: "The European Union has evolved significantly since the last public vote on membership over thirty years ago. Liberal Democrats therefore remain committed to an in/out referendum the next time a British government signs up for a fundamental change in the relationship between the UK and the EU." That certainly justifies his support for the coalition's referendum lock, which guarantees a vote next time the EU proposes a treaty change which will transfer power to Brussels. But does it justify his commitment to wrecking Cameron's referendum plans? Well, no. Let's look ...
