Barrera succeeds Lorena Gonzalez after her election to the 80 th Assembly District Lorena Gonzalez resigned her position as secretary-Treasurer and CEO of the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council, AFL-CIO on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, one day after being elected to represent California’s 80th Assembly District. “I’ve worked side by side with Lorena for years, and I have always been proud to have her at the head of this Labor Council and as the best advocate that working families in San Diego could have asked for,” said Mickey Kasparian, President of the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council and UFCW Local 135. “I couldn’t be happier that, along with Myrtle Cole, this Labor Council is able to mark the end of Lorena’s tenure by electing two of our own to champion Labor and workers’ rights as they represent San Diego.” After announcing her resignation on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, Gonzalez asked for support of her recommendation of Richard Barrera to succeed her as secretary-Treasurer and CEO of the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council. Labor secretary nominee Thomas Perez made it through a Senate committee on an embarrassingly narrow 12-10 vote Thursday, with no Republican support. Democrats want to hold a Senate floor vote as soon as possible, and no wonder. The Justice Department's civil-rights chief's flexible interpretation of the law and disingenuous testimony echoes other abuses of power currently unfolding in Washington. As these columns have explained, Mr. Perez convinced the City of St. Paul, Minnesota last year to withdraw an antidiscrimination case from the Supreme Court in exchange for Justice's agreement not to join two False Claims Act cases against the city. In doing so, Mr. Perez undermined civil servants who wanted to pursue the cases, abandoned whistleblower Fredrick Newell who was trying to improve the lot of Minnesota's poor, and forfeited as much as $200 million in potential damages. The nomination of Thomas Perez to take over as Labor secretary has moved from a Senate panel to the full US Senate. The party-line vote was 12-10. Republican opposition is strong and it is building. So, why? Thomas Perez, the Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division of the DOJ, is a racialist and an open borders proponent. An internal watchdog report just released by the DOJ’s Inspector General, Michael E. Horowitz, harshly criticized Perez’ department while under his leadership. Perez blamed it on Bush but the report shows clearly that the racialism is a serious problem in the department because of his leadership. The report states that “the politically charged atmosphere and polarization within the Voting Section continued even after the 2009 change in the Division’s leadership.” While there was insufficient evidence of clear wrongdoing, the report states that the the high level of “mistrust and polarization” in the department puts enforcement of voting laws and redistricting at risk of improper handling. Since 2009, cases of white victims were ignored and the cases taken up were “traditional” civil rights cases on behalf of racial or ethnic minorities who have been the historical victims of discrimination.” One former attorney, J. Assistant Attorney General Tom Perez's bid to be the next Labor secretary might have passed the first hurdle in the Senate, but Republicans are still strongly opposed to the nomination. The U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions voted Thursday to move Perez's nomination to the full Senate for consideration. The committee vote was delayed twice by Republicans, who said they wanted more information about Perez. Critics have hinted at the possibility of using a filibuster to block a confirmation vote before the full Senate. The 12-10 vote yesterday was along party lines, with several Republicans noting their objections. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), the committee's ranking member, said he was troubled by a review of Perez's actions as chief of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division since 2009. An recent DOJ inspector general's report found politics in the division was affecting the division from working efficiently. Alexander also said he did not like Perez’s handling of a Minnesota federal whistleblower case, which has been the subject of a report by several Republican members of Congress and a House hearing.
