The Dodgers will replace Brandon League with Kenley Jansen at the closer spot effective Tuesday, reports Mark Saxon of ESPN Los Angeles . After League blew his fourth save in 17 chances, manager Don Mattingly made the switch to the more effective Jansen. More Dodgers : Kenley Jansen named Dodgers closer Mattingly cited the "unsettling feeling" of not having stability from the closer role, and he believes that Jansen will improve the overall morale of the team. League has an ERA this season of an even 6.00, and has struggled despite receiving a large contract from the Dodgers this past offseason. Mattingly had been using Jansen as more of a relief ace, bringing him in tight spots that have the greatest impact on the outcome of the game. Moving him to the traditional closer role will surely cause some of the more sabermetrically-inclined Dodger fans to get their pitchforks out, but there is no doubt they had to make a change to the closer spot. Mattingly also correctly mentioned the fact that many teams have bullpen problems, so their predicament is nothing out of the ordinary. Brandon League is out as the Dodgers’ closer and Kenley Jansen is in. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said that he had been contemplating the move for a week but he didn’t make it official until Tuesday, one day after League blew his fourth save of the season in a 5-4 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. “I don’t know that it works better this way,” Mattingly said. “I wish I could say we had the sixth through the ninth (innings) covered and that any time we got there the game was going to be over. We’re like every other team. Nobody knows that if it gets there it’s going to be over. There’s a lot of teams with bullpen problems.” But the need for the Dodgers to make a move became painfully obvious Monday, when League coughed up a 3-1 lead by allowing four runs in two-thirds of an inning. That raised his ERA to 6.00, the highest among all pitchers on the Dodgers’ active roster and the only ERA above 4.00. Though League has converted 13 save opportunities this season, Monday’s blown save seemed to sting the manager particularly hard. “Losses like last night really hurt you,” Mattingly said. “Those are just tough losses, games that you feel like you had in hand then you give one up.” League struck out Miguel Montero to start the ninth inning, then allowed a single to Martin Prado , a double to Gerardo Parra , and an infield single to pinch-hitter Jason Kubel that scored Prado from third. According to Ken Gurnick the Dodgers manager had been considering a change at the closers role for a week. It took until Monday’s blown save against Arizona for Mattingly to make the decision. All told, League has a 6.00 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and four blown saves on the season. League was not getting it done and given his 1.5 home runs per nine is not even an option in mop-up duty at this point. Replacing League will be Kenley Jansen who has a 2.53 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 44/6 K/BB ratio over 32 innings this season. While Jansen has impressive strike out numbers he has yet to prove he is a shutdown closer blowing seven saves last season in 32 attempts. ...
