As the snow melts and trash left on the ground from last summer starts to make an appearance, the City of Kenai is making an effort to clean up the Peninsula. At least 31 residents of Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula were sickened early this year in a Campylobacter outbreak linked to raw milk, according to a report from state health officials. While this outbreak, which lasted from early January to mid-February, appears to be over, the farm whose raw milk caused the outbreak could still be serving contaminated product, according to the document, published by the Alaska Section of Epidemiology (SOE) last week. Between January 8 and February 13, 31 people between the ages of 7 months and 72 years old fell ill with Campylobacter coli infections that were ultimately linked to a cow-share program on the Peninsula. Of the victims, two were hospitalized and four developed reactive arthritis, a painful inflammation of the joints caused by bacterial infections that can last up to a year. The SOE report reveals that health officials had identified the cow-share program on the Peninsula as the outbreak source by February 14. The following day, SOE and the Office of the State Veterinarian informed the implicated dairy and the public of the problem; however the dairy continued to sell its raw milk products on the Kenai Peninsula and in Anchorage. At that point, 29 cases of Campylobacter coli had been linked to the dairy. There are quite a few items on their agenda that pertain to Seward Schools. These reports are always interesting. The the 6th grade move item is on the agenda as an action item as follows: Approval of Continued Study of Seward Middle School Reconfiguration. If approved, it would direct the administration to report back to the school board by October 2013 with a recommendation on whether or not to reconfigure Seward Middle School to grades 6-8. This is our best opportunity to speak directly to the school board on this topic! Public comments are limited to 3 minutes. There is also a work session on the 6th grade move from 430-500 this afternoon at the high school. The BP Teachers of Excellence awards banquet was held last night, and Skyview High School social studies teacher Robert Sparks was named the Kenai Peninsula BP Teacher of the Year. Robert Sparks teaches social studies, 10 th grade world history and 12 th grade government at Skyview High School. Believing education is a 24-hour experience, Sparks encourages his students to discuss information from school at home, and has received numerous comments from parents who say their children are knowledgeable about events and subjects they never had interest in before. Sparks is a co-creator of the Classroom WithOut Walls (CWOW) Program which allows students to use digital devices and mobile technologies to connect with other parts of the world. Through CWOW, students have discussed important historical events with people who lived through them, and have been a part of videoconference lessons with students in Afghanistan, Kenya, Israel, Yemen and numerous states.
