" I love being mayor, I love getting up and going to work and I want to thank the voters for giving me the opportunity to go back to city hall ," said Mayor Castro. And what a mayor he has been. In November, Castro campaigned successfully for an 1/8th cent sales tax increase to fund pre-kindergarten classes for San Antonio children. The funding will provide pre-K for 22,400 students over four years. Castro has instituted a car share program in San Antonio, added 108 salad bars in San Antonio schools, and helped invigorate the economy to the point where some have named San Antonio the best-performing local economy in the country.

Source: politic365.com --- Monday, May 13, 2013
On Saturday, Julian Castro was re-elected to a third term as the Mayor of San Antonio with 66.5 percent of the vote. The San Antonio Express-News reports that only 6.9 percent of eligible voters turned out . Although this is a victory for Julian Castro, he did not garner as high percent of support as he did in the 2011 election, where he won with nearly 82 percent of the vote. Castro indicates that he will continue to make education and commerce top priorities. According to The San Antonio Express-News : “In the coming two-year term, Castro said, he and his council colleagues would “make the tough choices” in balancing the city’s $2 billion budget and “get priorities straight.” He said San Antonio is a city that supports business and education, alluding to a new city project dubbed “Café Commerce,” to help local businesses in multiple aspects, and to Pre-K 4 SA, which voters approved in November. In the near term, the city would see positive effects from efforts to aid local companies, Castro said, and over decades, better-educated children will also bolster the city’s economy.” Castro had six challengers, three of whom were security guards. Since delivering a speech at last year’s Democratic National Convention, Castro has become more prominent nationally. Many wonder if he and his twin brother, Congressman Joaquin Castro, will help turn Texas blue (Democratic) . ...
