Boston Red Sox: Will Boston Move Jose Iglesias Away from Shortstop Long-Term?

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Tuesday, May 21, 2013
The Boston Red Sox have begun an experiment to see what else Jose Iglesias is capable of defensively. It’s well-known that Iglesias is a great defensive shortstop—easily the best in the organization—but it’s been his offense that’s kept him from being a starter in the big leagues. As Iglesias currently continues to develop in Triple-A Pawtucket , there are plans in place to move him around the infield. Iglesias will be getting playing time at second and third base in the near future in addition to fielding grounders at shortstop frequently, according to Brian MacPherson of The Providence Journal . “They said I’m moving around, just to get an idea,” Iglesias told MacPherson . “They haven’t told me anything else.” Well, Pawtucket told Iglesias that he was going to make his first career start away from shortstop on Tuesday afternoon. MacPherson was present for the game and tweeted out some of his thoughts on Iglesias at playing the hot corner. MacPherson noted in his article that “all indications are that Iglesias will remain primarily a shortstop” and “the work at positions other than shortstop is not a sign that Iglesias is becoming a utility infielder.” While this is important to keep in mind, it’s also interesting to ponder what the future could hold for Iglesias if he’s able to play positions other than shortstop at a high level defensively. For one, it would certainly open up a series of doors. The Red Sox are relatively set a ...

(AP) PAWTUCKET, R.I. — It’s been well over a month since Jose Iglesias was optioned back to Triple-A Pawtucket after his tremendous start to 2013 as a fill-in for Stephen Drew . Things have not been going as well for Iglesias in Pawtucket, however, and he’s seeking ways to improve his chances of making it back to the big leagues. Iglesias, who is renowned as a slick fielding shortstop, is getting the start at third base on Tuesday afternoon against the Indianapolis Indians, the first appearance of his professional career at a position other than shortstop. “Iggy’s been taking ground balls down there for about two weeks, a little bit at second base, a little bit at third base, just to expose him to the positions,” PawSox manager Gary DiSarcina said before Tuesday’s game. In doing so, the Sox hope to put him in position to find more pathways to contribute in the big leagues. DiSarcina, a former major league shortstop, has experience adjusting to both third base and second base, and has been helping Iglesias with the transition. “Speaking personally about my own career, I played shortstop in the minor leagues and my first game in the big leagues was at third base and I felt completely out of place,” said the manager, who stressed the importance of getting Iglesias some exposure to different positions. “The last thing you want to do is to put someone in a p ...

Jose Iglesias Taking Grounders at Third Base, Second Base at Pawtucket to Provide Red Sox Some Roster Flexibility

Source: nesn.com --- Monday, May 20, 2013
<img src="http://nesncom.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/jose-iglesias1.jpg?w=400&h=225" & width="150" & height="84" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />Jose Iglesias usually plays shortstop, but it appears that he’s getting some work in at some other positions around the diamond. The Pawtucket infielder has been taking grounders at third base and second base before games, according to the Providence Journal, to provide the big-league Red Sox some increased roster flexibility. “”They said I’m moving around, just to get an idea,” Iglesias said. “They haven’t told me anything else.” With Stephen Drew holding down the fort at shortstop in the big leagues, the Red Sox sent Iglesias back down to the minors earlier this year to get some more seasoning. In the meantime, Pedro Ciriaco has been the backup infielder for the major league club. Should anything happen to Ciriaco, however, the Sox roster is a bit thin at second and third — a problem Iglesias could help solve. “He’s a shortstop,” PawSox manager Gary DiSarcina said. “He’s going to be a major-league shortstop. But the goal is just to give him a tool — not just for himself, but for the organization.” Iglesias, known more for his defensive wizardry than his offense, is batting .204 for Pawtucket this season with three home runs and 14 RBIs. ...
