John Wall is one of the 7 point guards who will be at Las Vegas in July to attend the USA Basketball’s offseason mini-camp. The camp will culminate with a scrimmage on July 25. Seven point guards are expected to be in the group of 24 players invited to USA Basketball’s offseason mini-camp in July, including Portland’s Damian Lillard and Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving, the NBA’s recent Rookie of the Year winners. The crop of point guards also includes Ty Lawson, John Wall and Kemba Walker who have already accepted invitations to attend the camp in Las Vegas on July 22-25. The Memphis Grizzlies’ Mike Conley and the Indiana Pacers’ George Hill, each involved in the NBA playoffs, will likely get invites. Now's around the time of the year when the league's top young American players get invitations to participate in Team USA Basketball's select team minicamp in Las Vegas in July. This is essentially the program's way of cultivating a reserve pool of potential team participants while trying to pick out ones that could be ticketed for the team in the future. Twenty-four players will be a part of that group, and John Wall and Bradley Beal will be two of them. Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports reports Wall will be one of seven point guards selected, a list that includes Kyrie Irving , Damian Lillard , Ty Lawson , Mike Conley , Kemba Walker and George Hill . Meanwhile, Michael Lee of the Washington Post reports that Beal has also received an invitation. The quality of players selected can range from legitimate national-team options to practice filler. It remains to be seen where Wall and Beal fall on that spectrum, but it's a good sign that they've been invited. This shouldn’t come as news to anyone—at least, we hope it shouldn’t come as news to anyone—but sneakers don’t make you a better basketball player. They can help you avoid injuries. They can provide additional support. And, in some cases, they can even make you a fraction of a second faster. But they cannot make you a better basketball player! If you’re no good out on the court, you’re not suddenly going to be good just because you strap on a new pair of sneakers. At least, that’s what we always thought. Sneakers are sneakers. They’re not miracles. So they can’t actually help you improve your game. However, adidas is trying to prove that theory wrong by showing how much better Washington Wizards point guard John Wall played this year when he wore the new adidas Crazyquick versus when he didn’t. He didn’t debut the Crazyquick sneakers until March 6. So adidas is working with a very small sample size. But, as you can see, Wall put up better numbers in the 24 games during the 2012-13 NBA season that he wore the Crazyquicks versus the 25 games during the season that he didn’t wear them. This infographic shows the difference: adidas makes a pretty compelling argument here. As you can see, Wall’s numbers were higher in the Crazyquicks than they were before he started wearing them. It's been a tremendous week for Jason Collins . As we all know, Collins opened up about his sexuality i n an article in Sports Illustrated on Monday . Since then, Collins's news has been met mostly with positivity , and he has repeatedly shared his appreciation of all the support he's been receiving. As much praise as he's been getting this week, Collins has also been generously praising his family, friends, teammates, and heroes. The NBA regular season has ended, and once again, the Washington Wizards have found themselves missing the playoffs, as they came in 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 29-53 record. The Wizards have been hoping that their young core would mature quickly and help to lead them to their first postseason berth since the 2007-2008 season, but they have yet to see the improvement necessary to take the next step forward. The team's success almost entirely falls upon the shoulders of the 22-year-old John Wall, who has been showing improvement in each of his three seasons in the NBA. Although Wall has provided the Wizards with consistently strong play at the point guard position, he has yet to develop into a franchise-level player capable of carrying his team night-in and night-out. Washington does not have a strong enough supporting cast to win a significant amount of games without Wall, which became a major issue this year, as the young guard was not fully healthy until the last few weeks of the season. Even though the Wizards will not be content with the overall performance of the team this season, the performance of Wall as the season came to a close should provide them with great hope for the upcoming year. Over the last two months of the season, John Wall averaged an impressive 22.7 points per game on 46.4-percent shooting, 7.8 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 1.6 steals over 36 minutes a game.
