Missteps like getting out of bed in the morning and grabbing mismatched socks. John Dorsey did that at a practice I was at, but he didn’t care. He walked around the field watching practice with two different socks. No biggie; he was into what the players were doing. Dorsey ... ...

That thread is a goldmine of entertaining Chiefs stories. But reader @ZacharySewell sends in a close encounter that was too good not to highlight. First off, what we have here is KC Chiefs GM John Dorsey. @ arrowheadpride Yes. Same flight to KC. Was down to earth. I wasn't going to bug him, but since he was in KC gear I figured he didn't mind. — Zach Sewell (@zacharysewell) June 10, 2013 Further examination is needed: 1. The GM of the team is decked out in Chiefs gear ... at the Chicago airport. Take that, Jim Harbaugh and your 49ers sweatshirt in KC last weekend! 2. Sleeves rolled up because of course they are. 3. In line at McDonald's. 4. Chiefs sweatshirt has a stain on it. This makes me think our top 10 list on Dorsey and Andy Reid acting like college roommates is pretty spot-on. John Dorsey is one of us! More from AP: Jamaal closing in on Chiefs all-time rushing record Chiefs plan to fix Knile Davis' fumbling problems Alex Smith is 'better than advertised', according to GM John Dorsey Story time! And he likes his quarterback. KC Chiefs GM John Dorsey spoke with Kevin Kietzman on 810 WHB late last week and after hearing him talk I think we have a winner in the contest to see who could compliment Alex Smith the most. The Chiefs GM was asked what his scouting report of Smith would say after seeing him in the Chiefs offseason program. "Better than advertised," Dorsey told Kietzman . "From a leadership standpoint, he's a natural leader. Guys gravitate to him automatically and that's a very true sign. Intellectually, he's absorbed this playbook as fast as anyone I've seen. As coach says, I can load him up with anything and he can dissect it. If he makes one mistake, he learns from that mistake. "He's absorbed this playbook as fast as anyone I've seen." -John Dorsey on Alex Smith "His pass to 20 yards, deep throws, are as accurate, if not more accurate, than I had originally thought. I always knew he was a good athlete. He has more than enough arm strength. "Now it comes down to a timing thing and understanding of this new offense with what he has, getting timing with his weapons in terms of his receivers and tight ends, understanding the impact the running back will have on the passing game and how it will open up different lanes. Just getting a broader understanding of how this offense can help him succeed if he just kinda follows through. "Great kid. I'm very happy with where he is right now. But he still doesn’t feel comfortable gambling too much. "I like to err on the side of being conservative," he told me. "But sometimes it’s hard to pass up a really talented player. You can work with certain things. Sometimes when you are 2-14 you have to do something like that to get jump started. And when you have a head coach like Andy Reid who is a very strong leader of men, who can guide men in the right direction, you can do that." .... Some teams wanted nothing to do with Kelce, but Dorsey got to know him and subsequently his comfort level with him grew. "We sat with him in the combine interview, then I went on my own and talked to him on the side at the combine at various points during the week," he said. "In my own little way, I kind of got to know him over time. I feel very comfortable with the kid. I think he likes football. I think he wants to be a good football player. I think he respects the game. He just needs to understand talent alone doesn’t get you success in this league. You have to do the little things. I think Anthony Fasano is a good leader and role model for him." As for Davis, Dorsey acknowledges the fumbles were a concern. So before the draft, he spoke with three or four running back gurus who told him they thought Davis’ ...

The Chiefs were more talented than most teams selecting first in the NFL Draft, but clearly change was needed when the record read 2-14. The only question was just how much turnover the roster would endure. In an offseason where numerous regime changes have been made, it has been impressive to watch new general manager John Dorsey and head coach Andy Reid go to work. In fact, even if you disagree with certain moves, it's hard not to appreciate the resolve with which they are executing their franchise plan. Consider the decisiveness with which they attacked the quarterback position. Few Chiefs fans need a reminder of the horrific quarterback play in recent years with Matt Cassel , Tyler Palko , Brady Quinn and company manning the position. Yet outside of rolling the dice on a rookie, it's difficult for NFL teams to upgrade the position. Dorsey and Reid went right to work and had a trade for Alex Smith finished with the San Francisco 49ers two weeks before the NFL league year reset in March, when they could announce the deal. It was clear that the team had considered the prospects available, surveyed the free agent landscape and pinpointed Smith as the favorite. They were then willing to shell out the price that the 49ers demanded. W ...
