Source: krebsonsecurity.com --- Tuesday, June 18, 2013
<img src="http://krebsonsecurity.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/javamess-285x226.jpg" & width="150" & height="119" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />Oracle today released a critical patch update for its Java software that fixes at least 40 security vulnerabilities in this widely deployed program and browser plugin. Updates are available for Java 7 on both Mac and Windows . The latest patch brings Java 7 to Update 25 ( looks like Oracle has finally followed through on its promise to stop shipping updates for Java 6). In its accompanying advisory , Oracle notes that 37 of the 40 vulnerabilities fixed in this update may be remotely exploitable without authentication — that is, they can be exploited over a network without the need for a username and password. If you really need and use Java for specific Web sites or applications, take a few minutes to update this software. Updates are available from Java.com or via the Java Control Panel . Keep in mind that updating via the control panel will auto-select the installation of the Ask Toolbar, so de-select that if you don’t want the added crapware. Other, seriously consider removing Java altogether. I’ve long urged end users to junk Java unless they have a specific use for it (this advice does not scale for businesses, which often have legacy and custom applications that rely on Java). This widely installed and powerful program is riddled with security holes, and is a top target of malware writers and miscreants. If you have an affirmative use or need for Java, unplug it from the browser unless and until you’re at a site that requir ...

This update brings with it important security updates, reliability improvements and compatibility improvements. This Java 6 update is available from Apple, while the newer Java 7 is available directly from the developers at Oracle. Apple details the improvements to Java 6: Java for OS X 2013-004 delivers improved security, reliability, and compatibility by updating Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_51. On systems that have not already installed Java for OS X 2012-006, this update disables the Java SE 6 applet plug-in. To use applets on a web page, click on the region labeled "Missing plug-in" to download the latest version of the Java applet plug-in from Oracle. Please quit any web browsers and Java applications before installing this update. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5717 for more details about this update. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222 for information about the security content of this update. Earlier this year, Java was compromised several different times through various different exploits. Many have decided that the world doesn't need Java on the web anymore with HTML5 and other solutions, hence many recommend disabling Java completely. Depending on your operating system, you'll need to select the correct update or update your system through the Mac App Store. The update for Snow Leopard is available here and the Lion/Mountain Lion update is available here . ...
