Don’t Sleep On The Three Ball: There’s a Place in the NBA for James Southerland

Source: orangefizz.net --- Thursday, May 23, 2013
<img src="http://orangefizz.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Screen-Shot-2013-05-23-at-8.37.29-AM-300x121.png" & width="150" & height="60" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />Every year, the NBA Draft has a handful of lottery picks who will be taken high in the first round. Several Syracuse greats in the last decade have been in this group, like Carmelo Anthony, Jonny Flynn, Dion Waiters and now Michael Carter-Williams. But there have also been players like Kris Joseph, who just manage to snag one of those final picks in the second round. This year’s draft is June 27 and it’s very unlikely that Brandon Triche will be selected. But there is still speculation of whether teams will want James Southerland. Will Southerland find a home at the next level? In his four years in Syracuse, Southerland’s game has improved, and he had a stellar senior year. He is a player teams can use to space the floor in the NBA, but he might not be selected. Southerland saw less than eight minutes on the court his freshman year, but every year he was willing to play off the bench and provide minutes whenever needed. His sharp three point shooting improved annually, and was key in Syracuse’s run to the Sweet 16 in ’12 and Final Four this year. He is a player who can be built up and improved for the pros. While his inconsistency is something NBA teams may worry about, when he is hot he is hot. He shot just under 40 percent from deep this past season, including a breakout game against Arkansas when he made 9-of-13 threes and had 35 points. The role he played at Syracuse can be a similar in the NBA. He can simply come off the ben ...

Source: www.nunesmagician.com --- Thursday, May 16, 2013
<img src="http://cdn1.sbnation.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/13227303/165702267.0_standard_400.0.jpg" & width="150" & height="100" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />The hype and the hoopla might not be the same, but the goals at the 2013 NBA Combine compared to the NFL Draft Combine are -- impress those making the picks on draft day. On Thursday in Chicago, two former Syracuse Orange players, point guard Michael Carter-Williams and forward James Southerland, were suppose to showcase their skills during camp drills, however, only one -- Southerland -- did so. For an unknown reason, McDubz -- or better said his agent Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports -- decided it would be best if the 6-foot-6, young floor general did not participate in drills. (From what I am seeing, most of the drills surrounded around shooting, so that makes sense). He will, according to Syracuse.com's Mike Waters , participate in Friday's strength and agility drills. Carter-Williams is one of a handful of players who were expected to participate in the combine's drills on Thursday, but opted out at the last minute. Duke's Mason Plumlee and Indiana's Cody Zeller also elected not to participate today. MCW may explain why he decided not to participate in Thursday's drills, via his NBA.com Draft Diary, later on. (My guess is it has to do with some things that scout's dislike about him .) In the meantime, here is MCW hanging out with the slew of players that sat out. Cheering section.
