There, I said it. Today's Baseball Birthday, Jack Morris, was born on May 16th, 1955, in St. Paul, Minnesota. After playing college baseball at Brigham Young University, Morris was drafted in the 5th round of the Amateur Draft by the Detroit Tigers in 1976. Jack Morris made his big league debut for the Tigers on July 26th, 1977, after the Tigers called him up to replace an injured Marl Fidrych. In 7 games with the Tigers in '77, Morris was 1-1, with a 3.74 ERA, striking out 28 batters while walking 23. After going 3-5 in '78, Jack Morris won 17 games, starting a streak of 14 or more wins, between '77-92. Morris won 20+ games three times, and no pitcher won more games in the 1980's (162), than Jack Morris did. Morris was a young pitcher on very young Tigers teams of the late '70's and early '80's, teams that included Lance Parrish, Lou Whitaker, Alan Trammell, and Kirk Gibson. Morris logged 3,824 innings in 549 big league games, striking out 2,478 batters. On April 7th of the 1984 baseball season, Jack Morris threw a no-hitter at Comiskey Park in Chicago, vs, the White Sox. That no-hitter was the centerpiece of a record 35-5 start by the Tigers, which led to the '84 East Division, American League, and World Series Championships. Jack Morris left the Tigers after a disappointing 15-18 season in 1990, and in 1991 he led the Minnesota Twins to the World Series Title, winning ...

The two discussed the analyst’s comments during a broadcast last week, in which Morris accused Buchholz of doctoring the baseball over the course of a seven-inning shutout effort — comments that set off something of a firestorm regarding the use of rosin and perhaps a substance such as BullFrog sunscreen on the mound to improve the pitcher’s grip. What did Morris say to Buchholz? “It was alright. Nothing really. He was just confirming that he wasn’t bashing me for anything in any way. That was basically it,” said Buchholz. “I said it from the beginning. I don’t have any ill feelings towards anyone. They’re people who are supposed to talk about stuff and that was just the topic that got a lot of attention I guess. It was fine. “It was definitely better to do it that way than to hear it through somebody else’s words. It was basically nothing said. Just said he wasn’t trying to take away from my pitching or anything, just something that he saw and he would have said it regarding who was on the mound.” Buchholz, who is 6-0 with a 1.60 ERA, is slated to face the Blue Jays again on Saturday. He seemed more concern about the task of picking up on the dominance exhibited by Jon Lester (who threw a one-hit complete-game shutout) than with the comments ...

Source: fullcount.weei.com --- Thursday, May 02, 2013
On Thursday, a form of ex-pitcher-on-ex-pitcher crime took place, when Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley ripped longtime American League opponent Jack Morris for comments the latter made as a Blue Jays broadcaster suggesting that Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz was using an illegal substance to doctor the baseball. Eckersley suggested that Buchholz’s command of a wide range of pitches served as a rebuttal to the notion that he was using a foreign substance, and suggested on NESN that Morris’ claims to the contrary were “clueless.” “When you throw a spitball, the ball falls off the table, and you know it right away. The hitters didn’t complain, but Jack Morris is. I think Jack Morris should zip it,” Eckersley said on NESN. “I feel sorry for Buchholz to even have to deal with this. I’m styling here, and you’re taking away from me, a guy that can’t even make it to the Hall of Fame yet, and he’s chirping over there — zip it.” (More of Eckersley’s comments are here .) Interestingly, this is not the first time that Eckersley and Morris have had a public — and personal — disagreement. In 1992, when Eckersley’s Athletics played Morris’ Blue Jays in the ALCS, Morris denounced Eckersley’s conduct on the mound — most notably, his enthusiastic fist-pumping after a strikeout of an opponent — as “Little League stuff.” Prior to the following game, Eckersley and Morris spoke on the field. Eckersley offered the following account of the conversation in ...

After dismissing Toronto broadcaster Dirk Hayhurst as a “ career minor leaguer ” before Thursday’s game, Eck showed no restrain in similarly going after Blue Jays television announcer (and former MLB pitcher) Jack Morris . During Thursday night’s broadcast on SportsNet of the Sox-Jays game, Morris reportedly expounded on comments by former Jays pitcher Dirk Hayhurst that Buchholz had used an illegal substance. Eckersley became incensed about Morris’ accusations, noting that it would be impossible for Buchholz to command his arsenal in such dominating fashion if he were using an illegal substance on the ball. “I was upset during the game when we found out what was happening with Jack Morris, and the more I saw it, the more I started thinking about it, it made me more and more angry about Jack Morris. To me, that’s clueless on his part,” Eckersley said on NESN. “If he knew anything about Buchholz, he knows how nasty he is. His ball doesn’t dance all over the place. The guy paints. He’s got nasty stuff. [Morris] should know that, and he’s gotten carried away. It becomes about Jack Morris almost. “Where’s Jack Morris been all these years, anyway?” Eckersley continued. “He finally gets a job up there in Toronto and he has to make statements like that and take away from what this kid has done? I think it’s wrong. He’s pitched long enough to know. Guys, you talk about stick-’em, whatev ...

"I found out because the guys on the video camera showed it to me right after the game," he said. "I didn't see it during the game. They showed it to me and said, 'What do you think of this?' and I said, 'Well, he's throwing a spitter. Cause that's what it is."
