The sitting Congress has the most women of any in history. Artist Emily Nemens is capturing each of them in paint, and using their likenesses in graphics to show how far we still have to go to bring gender equality to Washington. The 113th Congress’s record-setting number of women representatives is an inspiration to many Americans that gender inequality in Washington is slowly declining. For artist Emily Nemens , the chambers’ women are more literally an inspiration: their style-- "a rainbow of powersuits, gaudy jewelry, big hair and congressional pins" meets "genuine character, strength and beauty"-- has motivated her to hand-paint each of their portraits with watercolors and post them to her Tumblr " Women of the 113th ." The visual appeal of two female politicians in particular, at opposite ends of the political spectrum, captivated Nemens: that of strident conservative Michele Bachmann and consumer advocate Elizabeth Warren. "I was watching the republican primary debates in spring 2011, and was overwhelmed by how hard [Bachmann] was trying to look feminine, while trying to spar with all the other contenders," Nemens says. "Neither effort was entirely successful, but it got me thinking: how do female politicians present themselves?" There are lots of ways, of course. There’s the beaming, election-night smile of Warren, which inspired Nemens, the rotating hat supply of Florida’s Federica Wilson, and the cool-librarian glasses ...

I do! I do! Lifehacker posted this link to Beer Viz, a site that lets you find beers similar to the ones you like in color, taste, and aroma (or all of the above). With pretty graphics! The downside is you have to choose between "light, medium, and dark" at the very beginning, which seems sort of arbitrary, but I guess they couldn't fit ALL the beer families at one table. I think (hope?) this is still a work in progress, so hopefully they will add more varieties soon! Moral of the story: I have not tried nearly enough beers. I should get on that. ...

When I was a kid, every trip to the doctor’s office inevitably resulted in at least one lengthy period in which I was alone in the examining room, surrounded by old-school medical infographic posters . By the time I took high school human biology, I was pretty much an expert on such pertinent topics as the makeup of the inner ear and the journey through the digestive tract. Fun stuff, certainly, and today’s Infographics are even better. If you’ve ever been tasked with designing a medical infographic or poster, you know you have to visually convey a lot of potentially confusing information. All Infographics are like that. But you also have to visually convey potentially embarrassing information with tact – and that can prove challenging. What’s more, some of the topics are downright horrifying. Threats of pandemics (which most people read as “plague”) have to handled with care. On one hand, your job is to help inform the public of health threats; on the other hand, you don’t want to incite mass hysteria. Finding the perfect balance is a hallmark of great infographic designers, and as such I’ve spotlighted 10 excellent medical Infographics here (follow the title links for larger versions). 1. Just found out that while I was sleeping in Berlin every magazine designer had congregated to New York for the yearly SPD Gala. Businessweek won a few awards, amongst them a GOLD for Infographics!
