Personalized reading App Zite is updating its IOS App Wednesday with a few Google Reader-inspired features and some algorithm changes designed to surface more obscure content. Zite also announced seven new publishing partners — including GigaOM — bringing the total number of publishers it works with to 24. Zite outlined the changes in a blog post. CEO Mark Johnson has been pretty vocal about how he doesn’t think Zite should be like Google Reader , and told me the new features Zite has added to its IOS App are those that “enhance the user experience both for Google Reader users and the reading population in general.” Articles will now “gray out” after they’ve been read, users will be able to save sources as favorites and Zite’s algorithm will pay more attention to obscure content: “One of the biggest problems with Google Reader is that RSS feeds which publish many stories per day tend to dominate your feed, so the obscure blog you found a few years ago that publishes every three months can be drowned out in the noise. Zite’s algorithm will more aggressively highlight rare content, so feel free to ‘like’ publishers that you enjoy, no matter how popular or rare.” An Android update is coming soon. Foursquare has updated its IOS App today with a revamped filtering system that allows users to set additional parameters, such as price and number of previous check-ins, for all of their search queries. In the previous version of the App, tapping the search bar at the top of the screen would trigger a number of different choices, such as location type (shopping, sights, food, etc.) as well as a number of additional options such as ‘Saved’ and ‘Haven’t Been’. These were particularly useful for finding places that were suitable to your tastes; you might have been taking your girlfriend out for a romantic dinner, but wanted to make sure you reserved a table somewhere neither of you had been before. Likewise, tapping ‘Open Now’ ensured that the five-star bar you traipsed off to afterwards was actually open. Combining these with search queries, however, was difficult. The updated IOS App now includes a new ‘Filter’ area which can be accessed from the top right-hand corner of the screen at any time. It means that the user can set multiple filters simultaneously; both before and after submitting a search query. The biggest news story on the internet today is that Yahoo has acquired the blogging platform Tumblr for $1.1 billion. It’s a landmark transaction as Tumblr has over 300 million monthly unique visitors, with over 50 billion blog posts. Yahoo officially announced the acquisition this morning , and confirmed that Tumblr will continue to operate as a separate entity, with founder and CEO David Karp remaining at the helm. Tumblr will now have new recourses to draw from, and Yahoo is planning to integrate Tumblr posts into other Yahoo services, their home page, and search. It’s also interesting to note the audience differences as Yahoo trends older, and Tumblr trends younger, so Yahoo could be aiming for an infusion of a younger audience. In IOS related news, Tumblr released a brand new update today for their iPhone and iPad App, (Free, Universal) . The main feature of version 3.3.2 is a new post type chooser that presents a vertical pop-up for the different post types that sits unobtrusively in the bottom right. The interface is reminiscent of the Path App, and Stacks in Mac OS X. There’s also new App attributions for posts. It’s a nice coincidence that the update released the same day as the acquisition news. Just as Yahoo has announced its acquisition of Tumblr, the Tumblr team has released an update for its IOS App bringing a redesigned user interface that offers up a brand new post type chooser, displaying post options that fan out vertically from the App's redesigned compose button to allow for speedier posting. The redesigned menu is similar to the radial posting options used by social networking App Path, which displays buttons unobtrusively in the corner of the App. Previously, hitting Tumblr's compose button opened a new window with square-shaped posting icons, which was more obtrusive than the current overlay design. Old Design on Left, New Design on Right Tumblr's update, which was obviously in the works prior to the Yahoo acquisition, also includes App attribution for posts from IOS devices, a feature that was not previously available for mobile posters.
