Source: www.foxnews.com --- Saturday, May 25, 2013
Seven months after Hurricane SANDY ravaged the New Jersey Shore, destroying homes and dramatically upending lives, the tourist towns dotting the coast have ramped up repairs which are nearly complete as the summer tourist begins. But for many of the residents in surrounding areas, still embroiled in a morass of loss and red tape, it has been their neighbors and ordinary citizens who have stepped in to provide vital help and support. From a "bucket brigade" offering food from repurposed shipping containers to an operation that returns treasured photos blown away by the storm to a movement to overturn last year's Flood Insurance Reform Act, people have stepped up to help each other as well as themselves. Some were not even living in New Jersey when SANDY ripped through October 29. Cassandra Vitale, 26, who had lived along the Jersey Shore as a child, was at her home in Melbourne, Fla. when the epic storm hit. [pullquote] "I think people in this [N.J.] area didn't realize what could happen," Vitale, who had weathered Hurricane Wilma in 2005, said in an interview with FoxNews.com. As she reached out to old friends in New Jersey, one mentioned that she was stranded far from home due to a flat tire, Vitale posted a message on Facebook to see if anyone could help. Before she knew it, Vitale was posting and reposting messages of people along the Shore and appealing for help. "I just started posting things that I thought would be rele ...

The night of the storm, I spent a lot of time out in the storm with Police Chief [Darren] Lavigne.” Henry continued, “After the storm, where was I? Out observing the devastation and speaking with many of the residents…I spoke with many residents and was invited into a number of homes to view the damage. To say the least it was horrifying,” he said. “At no time did I ask for a photo op to publicize this horrible loss, but I did very quickly authorize outside help to clean up the streets and it was done with extreme efficiency.” Henry also addressed the acc ...

Source: www.politickernj.com --- Thursday, May 23, 2013
WASHINGTON – In order to provide additional assistance to families and businesses struggling to rebuild in the wake of Hurricane SANDY, U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09) led a bipartisan coalition including Reps. Joseph Crowley (D-NY), Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ), Michael Grimm (R-NY), John Larson (D-CT), Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ), Charles Rangel (D-NY), Tom Reed (R-NY), Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) and Jon Runyan (R-NJ) in introducing legislation to provide tax relief to the victims of the devastating storm that caused widespread destruction throughout the Northeast. "While the SANDY aid we fought so hard for is finally getting to the communities that desperately need it, we know it's not going to be enough to help families and businesses fully recover," said Rep. Pascrell, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee. "This legislation will go a long way towards filling this gap by providing immediate tax relief to those impacted by SANDY's devastation. Similar tax relief has been passed following some of our country's worst natural disasters, and SANDY victims deserve nothing less than the same treatment. Despite stepping up to the plate when other regions of the country ...
