LOWER TRESTLES, California/USA (Tuesday, May 28, 2013) - This year’s Hurley Pro – held at Lower Trestles on September 15th – will continue to showcase the world’s best surfers at the world’s most high-performance wave. But for the first time ever, Hurley is giving one of our coveted wildcard spots to you, as the 36th seed will be determined by a popular vote based on video submissions. Here’s how it works: from May 15 to July 15, we will accept video submissions from any and every American surfer with dreams of surfing in the Hurley Pro. Our judging panel will review all submissions and then rank the top 16 candidates. From there, we will place the top 16 in a man-on-man contest bracket. Starting July 29th, we leave the voting up to you. A true People’s Choice. So, prepare your clips or get ready to click. Photo by Surfing magazine Fueling the dreams of aspiring World Championship Tour surfers everywhere, Hurley kicked off the first-ever Hurley Pro Video Trials on May 15, leaving a giant question mark in the wildcard slot in the upcoming Hurley Pro, an ASP World Tour event at Lower Trestles in Southern California. While the wildcard slot has historically been handed to the winner of the traditional trials or a handpicked Hurley team rider, this year Hurley is putting a fresh spin on the selection process by opening the trials to any US surfer age 13 or older, with the winner being decided by an unprecedented qualify-by-video format. “There’s a whole new generation of American surfers with limitless talent,” says Hurley VP of Sports Marketing Pat O’Connell. “So, instead of limiting our trials to just 16 competitors, we wanted to open it up to any American surfer who can put together a string of amazing waves on video—and then leave it up to a public vote. In the past there’s been a certain degree of controversy surrounding WCT wildcard entries and the ability for event title sponsors to hand them out to whoever they please. They can of course cause big upsets. But mostly wildcard allocations and seeding system play to the advantage of the top seeds. Wherever you stand on this issue, Hurley are throwing something new into mix this year. For the first time ever, Hurley are planning on determining one of their wildcard entries by means of video submissions. That in itself doesn’t sound too radical but the idea that the comp winner is to be determined by popular vote might seem slightly controversial to some. Euros don’t get too excited, one of the conditions is you have to be American to take part.
