It isn't just the number of players missing, it's the quality. Vital performers Boniek Garcia and Maynor Figueroa are injured , while hulking defender Victor Bernardez and defensive midfielder Luis Garrido are suspended. If the forced absences weren't enough, forward Jerry Bengtson has left the team after a spat with manager Luis Fernando Suárez, following the coach's decision to bench the New England Revolution forward in the team's last qualifier against Jamaica. While the U.S. may be quietly doing fist pumps and celebrating its good fortune, the team is understandably taking a more muted approach in public. "It won't impact how we approach it at all," U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley told reporters before training Monday. "It's still Honduras and it's still 90 minutes to go out and try to win the game. As far as who plays for them, who doesn't, who's injured, who ends up being able to play, it doesn't change anything for us." With the key absences, the Catrachos will be heavily reliant on some familiar faces to many U.S. national team members. The United States takes on Honduras at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah tonight (7:30 Espn) with an opportunity to put themselves in the poll position to get to Brazil. The U.S. could see the return of Jermaine Jones in midfield with a 24 home unbeaten streak in qualifying on the line not to mention a bit of payback to a Honduran team that defeated the United States in Honduras. Things are a bit different this time around with the United States high on confidence after getting wins at Jamaica and home to Panama. Jozy Altidore has now scored in three consecutive games for the U.S. who are clearly now led by midfielder Michael Bradley and striker Clint Dempsey. Honduras has some real injury problems and one wonders if Houston Dynamo midfielder Boniek Garcia will get a game tonight in a huge match for the Central American side that currently sit in the fourth position. (Image, USSoccer.com) BY CHRISTIAN ARAOS Staff Writer With a four game unbeaten streak in the Hex and a three game winning streak overall, it is easy to be confident in the U.S. Men’s National Team right now. That confidence only magnifies when looking at the depth chart for a hobbled and depleted Honduran squad. With a look to their next two games, there is one hurdle remaining before a chance to clinch a berth in the World Cup: the heat. The temperature at kickoff tomorrow will be in the upper 80s. The average temperature of Saprissa in September is in the low to mid 80s as well. Making a big issue about the heat may seem pedantic but when it was a factor in the lone US loss during the Hex, and with the World Cup taking place in a mostly tropical setting, it’s a bigger deal than most would assume. The biggest effect the heat has on a team is that it forces them to slow the pace of play down in order to conserve energy throughout 90 minutes of play. This directly impacts the USMNT because their best attacking movement comes when they move the ball very quickly. Looking at the first US goal against Panama, it is the quick runs of four different players that make it possible. This was also evident during the second half when secondary runs gave Panama fits and led to DaMarcus Beasley hitting the post after a run from his left back position.
