Source: www.huffingtonpost.com --- Tuesday, June 18, 2013
By Seth Vertelney, Goal.com SALT LAKE CITY -- On the surface, it seems that Honduras is more than just depleted for its game against the USA Tuesday, it's decimated. It isn't just the number of players missing, it's the quality. Vital performers Boniek Garcia and Maynor Figueroa are injured , while hulking defender Victor Bernardez and defensive midfielder Luis Garrido are suspended. If the forced absences weren't enough, forward Jerry Bengtson has left the team after a spat with manager Luis Fernando Suárez, following the coach's decision to bench the New England Revolution forward in the team's last qualifier against Jamaica. While the U.S. may be quietly doing fist pumps and celebrating its good fortune, the team is understandably taking a more muted approach in public. "It won't impact how we approach it at all," U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley told reporters before training Monday. "It's still Honduras and it's still 90 minutes to go out and try to win the game. As far as who plays for them, who doesn't, who's injured, who ends up being able to play, it doesn't change anything for us." With the key absences, the Catrachos will be heavily reliant on some familiar faces to many U.S. national team members. Defender Matt Besler was a teammate of Roger Espinoza at Sporting Kansas City for four seasons before Espinoza was sold to Wigan. "I have great things to say about Roger, I think he's a really good player," Besler said. "I th ...

The U.S. could see the return of Jermaine Jones in midfield with a 24 home unbeaten streak in qualifying on the line not to mention a bit of payback to a Honduran team that defeated the United States in Honduras. Things are a bit different this time around with the United States high on confidence after getting wins at Jamaica and home to Panama. Jozy Altidore has now scored in three consecutive games for the U.S. who are clearly now led by midfielder Michael Bradley and striker Clint Dempsey. Honduras has some real injury problems and one wonders if Houston Dynamo midfielder Boniek Garcia will get a game tonight in a huge match for the Central American side that currently sit in the fourth position. This Travel Warning supersedes the Travel Warning dated November 21, 2012, to include additional information about reported kidnappings, information for victims of crime, as well as the Honduran police force’s ability to respond to reports of crime, and also serves to update contact information. Tens of thousands of U.S. citizens visit Honduras each year for study, tourism, business, and volunteer work without incident. However, crime and violence are serious problems throughout the country and the Government of Honduras lacks sufficient resources to address these issues. Honduras has the highest murder rate in the world. These threats have increased substantially over the past several years and remain high. Incidents can occur anywhere. U.S. citizens do not appear to be targeted based on their nationality. Crimes are committed against expatriates at levels similar to those committed against locals. Most resort areas and tourist destinations have lower levels of crime and violence than other areas of the country, though still high by international standards. Moreover, tourists traveling with group tours report fewer criminal incidents. In 2012, the government a ...

With a look to their next two games, there is one hurdle remaining before a chance to clinch a berth in the World Cup: the heat. The temperature at kickoff tomorrow will be in the upper 80s. The biggest effect the heat has on a team is that it forces them to slow the pace of play down in order to conserve energy throughout 90 minutes of play. This directly impacts the USMNT because their best attacking movement comes when they move the ball very quickly. Looking at the first US goal against Panama, it is the quick runs of four different players that make it possible. This was also evident during the second half when secondary runs gave Panama fits and led to DaMarcus Beasley hitting the post after a run from his left back position. Beasley is, of course, suspended for tomorrow night’s game but the principle still applies; ...
