This isn't really current-Seahawks specific in any way, but former Seattle head coach and NFL coaching legend Mike Holmgren was on with Dave "Softy" Mahler yesterday (he's now a KJR regular) and it was just a thoroughly entertaining and interesting hour. Holmgren and Softy just essentially bullshited for the first segment, with Mike telling stories of the old days under Bill Walsh and working with Joe Montana, Steve Young, and Brett Favre (he was a real pain in everyone's ass, unsurprisingly, but good), among other things. Holmgren shares stories of his staff in Green Bay, which at the time included his 'coaching tree' of Jon Gruden, Ray Rhodes, Dick Jauron, Andy Reid, Mike Sherman, and Steve Mariucci. Mariucci then joins the two in the second segment and more of the same follows. If you're interested in NFL history at all, it's a highly entertaining listen. Holmy!! Flyers GM Paul Holmgren met with beat writers before Tuesday night's game with Boston to talk about defenseman Kimmo Timonen being done for the season with a compression fracture in his right foot. Here is the transcript: Q: Paul, can you give us some specifics on Timonen's injury because he was wearing that boot for quite awhile? "I'm not sure that's related. This particular thing has been bugging him for a couple weeks and every time we want to go further than an x-ray with it, maybe get an MRI take a little deeper look, Kimmo said no it feels better. So we just kind of put it aside. He went and got an MRI yesterday and it showed this compression fracture and the doctor thought that because of where it is the potential risk of doing something much worse if he were to get hit there in that same spot is asking for trouble. Yes if you are reading the title right, Philadelphia Flyers GM Paul Holmgren says that Ilya Bryzgalov will not be bought out. In matter of fact, he thinks this buyout talk is out of bounds as he told ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun today. I know many Flyers fans that are reading this are saying well should we believe Homer because usually he does the opposite. As Paul Holmgren told LeBrun about the Flyers current goaltender situation he said “I think right now with Ilya and Steve [Mason], we’ve got good goaltending moving forward.” He continued to say “any talk of anything other than that is out of bounds.” If I’m a Flyers fan coming into next season, you have to be confident that you have two solid goalies. Sure, Ilya Bryzgalov is 18-17-3 with a .898 save percentage but it could be worse than that and you actually have a good backup. Yes I know we all miss Sergei Bobrovsky who is doing a tremendous job in Columbus and might win the Vezina trophy but look on the bright side you have Steve Mason and not Michael Leighton or Brian Boucher. Mason is still a young goaltender at the age of 24 that you can still build a franchise around. So far this season, he is 5-8-1 with a .908 save percentage. With better offense and defense from the Flyers, they could have easily been in the playoffs this season. Finally, even if the Flyers wanted to buyout Bryz it would cost the team $23 million over 14 years that hurts but they could always amnesty him beca ...
