TV TUESDAYS: The Best of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" (Norman Lloyd in person!)

Source: www.cinefamily.org --- Tuesday, June 18, 2013
The playfully sinister theme swells, the instantly familiar caricature appears, and our rotund host shuffles into frame, shrouded in silhouette — signalling a crackerjack, nod-and-a-wink night out with the murderous maestro. An immediate hit due to its extremely high level of craftsmanship both in front of and behind the camera (including scripts by giants Ray Bradbury and Robert Bloch), the suspense anthology show Alfred Hitchcock Presents ran for ten fantastic seasons, with every episode bookended by Hitchcock’s impeccably timed, droll commentary on the fate of the poor fictional souls caroming around its confines. In conjunction with this month’s “Hitchcock B-Sides & Rarities” series, we not only present some of our favorite episodes, but we also are tickled pink to have Norman Lloyd: not only Hitch’s longtime collaborator on the show, but also a world-class raconteur with a voluminous knowledge of pretty much everyone and everything in Hollywood. Norman’s been a showbiz vet for the past eight decades, so you should make a point of hanging out with him and with us for this banner evening, as he regales us with bon mots on the Hitch tip! Watch Cinefamily’s trailer for “TV Tuesdays: Alfred Hitchcock Presents”! Click here to view the embedded video. ...

And his personal life -- his fetish for the cool blonde whose refined appearance masks vivid sexuality -- inspired two movies, HBO's "The Girl," with Toby Jones as the master and Sienna Miller as Tippi Hedren, and "Hitchcock," starring Anthony Hopkins as Hitch, Helen Mirren as a reimagined Alma Hitchcock, and Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh. (At least if you believe that, as long as you spell his name right, it's good publicity. Otherwise we might not count "The Girl" and "Hitchcock" in the plus column.) Certainly the carefully-orchestrated release of his nine... ...

The low lighting and retro furniture were the perfect way to enjoy what was a seriously entertaining movie. After choosing our authentically retro vintage dresses (thank you Rokit!) we were able to complete the look with some super sixties hairstyles that were fixed and lacquered into place by the wonderful guys from Saks Hair&Beauty, all whilst sipping on some Hitchcock themed cocktails (the Janet Leigh was our favourite) expertly made by the guys upstairs in the uber cool cocktail bar Shaker and Company. Once we were sufficiently in character we settled down, popcorn in hand, to immerse ourselves in the fascinating world of Hitchcock, as he takes on the task of bringing to fruition his impenetrable masterpiece Psycho. Faultlessly cast, the film features Anthony Hopkins in the lead role with the ever-wonderful Dame Helen Mirren, as his longsuffering wife and partner Alma Reville, who, despite Hopkin’s unbelievably convincing turn as Hitchcock, manages to become the unlikely heroine and star of the film. Scarlett Johansson cuts quite a figure (literally) in the role of busty vixen Vivien Lee with a lovely addition to the cast in the form of Jessica Biel who plays the unfortunate V ...

But their newfound love is threatened when brutish power station worker Burt (Cyril McLaglen) also sets his sights on Nell. With the aide of his besotted ex squeeze Kate (Norah Baring), Burt hatches a plan to discredit Bill in Nell’s eyes, which climaxes in a furious chase through the London Underground and across the rooftops of the Lots Road power station . THE LOWDOWN If you sniff at the idea of watching a silent movie, then sniff no more as director Anthony Asquith ’s tale of love, jealousy and murder is one of the most exciting examples of vintage British cinema you will ever see.
