What do you expect from Henry Melton in 2013?

Source: www.windycitygridiron.com --- Saturday, May 18, 2013
<img src="http://cdn3.sbnation.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/13327977/156942405.0_standard_400.0.jpg" & width="150" & height="100" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />The Chicago Bears slapped the franchise tag on Pro Bowl defensive tackle Henry Melton to prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent this off season. Melton accepted and signed his tag without the drama that surrounded last years tagged Bears player, Matt Forte . Melton is set to make $8,450,000 for his '13 season, but the Bears and Melton are expected to try and get a long term contract worked out before the July 15th deadline. Brad Biggs of the Tribune speculated on what a potential long term deal could look like. If the Bears use Forte's contract as a way of doing business with Melton, it will be easy to predict what kind of guarantee Melton could be looking at. Forte's franchise tag was for $7.742 million and the $17.1 million guaranteed he received was nearly the same as the cost the club would have had to tag Forte twice - a 120 percent raise in the second year. That figure would have been $17.03 million. Using that as a rough outline, Melton could be looking at a potential guarantee of $18.59 million ($8.45 million for 2013 and a 120 percent raise to $10.14 million in 2014 under a second franchise tag). But there are a myriad of variables to consider. Melton plays a different position. Both sides can make the case the market has changed. The length of the deal could differ as well. Whether he plays under the tag money or signs something long term, that's still a serious chunk of change. He finally broke through an ...

Bears rumors: Henry Melton hopeful of long-term contract

Source: www.thenflinjuryreport.com --- Thursday, May 16, 2013
Chicago Bears defensive tackle Henry Melton signed his one-year franchise tender when the team presented him with it earlier this offseason. While he certainly won't be upset to collect a cool $8.45 million this season, Melton is holding out hope that an agreement on a long-term contract extension with the Bears will materialize, according to Brad Biggs of The Chicago Tribune. Melton hopes that sides can sit down and get a deal nailed out prior to the start of the regular season. However, he told reporters that he's not really thinking about his contract status that much. “I’m not going to really think too much about it,” Melton said. “It’s a decision that comes from within and upstairs if they want to keep me long term. We’re just kind of talking through some things. Everyone is getting set up and getting the drafted guys done. Hopefully we can sit down and get something done.” Since signing the tender, Melton has been a part of offseason workouts. If he's unable to reach an extension with the Bears, he'll be forced to play out the final season of his contract without a guarantee beyond 2013. Matt Forte face a similar circumstance and he refused to sign and he was rewarded with a long term deal right before training camp. Melton is using the good faith method; however, in the NFL good faith usually means you’re getting the screws put to you. Melton, the Bears best defensive lineman can’t holdout because signing the tag puts him under contract and any no shows can be penalized. Melton is hoping the leap of faith will result in the team committing to him for the long haul. “I’m not going to really think too much about it,” Melton said, via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. “It’s a decision that comes from within and upstairs if they want to keep me long term.
Re-signing Henry Melton should be Chicago Bears’ top priority

Source: www.rantsports.com --- Wednesday, May 15, 2013
<img src="http://www.rantsports.com/nfl/files/2013/05/Henry-Melton.jpg" & width="150" & height="84" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />Dennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY Sports It’s been two months since Henry Melton signed his $8.5 million franchise tender, but the Chicago Bears still have yet to make any significant progress in getting a long-term deal done with their disruptive defensive tackle. The two parties have until July 15 to get a long-term agreement in place, and it appears that they’re slowly working their way towards that goal. “We’re just kind of talking through some things,” Melton said. “Everyone is getting set up and getting the draft guys done. Hopefully we can sit down and get something done.” In the meantime, there’s plenty of reason to believe that Melton will receive the lucrative long-term deal he so rightfully earned last season. The most obvious reason is his effectiveness against the pass. According to Pro Football Focus, Melton was the No. 7 pass-rushing defensive tackle in 2012, finishing the season with a 15.8 rating. In only 386 pass-rush snaps, he managed eight sacks and 24 quarterback hurries. Throughout the season, he put constant pressure on opposing passers and asserted himself as a disruptive force. Melton was also one of the most efficient defensive tackles in the NFL against the run last season. Despite playing only 199 run defense snaps, Melton made 36 total tackles while missing none. Considering the average amount of snaps he played, it’s impressive to see the amount of impact stops he made. There’s still room for Melton to imp ...
