The creative process was more explosive for me. And I didn’t have a filter, and I didn’t try to filter anything, as much as just try to get stuff down. So, I would just write everywhere. After briefly exchanging niceties, Korine casually mentioned that he’d been spending the day “working out and making paintings”. Well, the story’s in the details; unfortunately, I have no fuckin’ idea what he said next. After re-listening to the audio about a hundred times, like a nutcase John Travolta in De Palma’s Blow Out , all I could come up with was this: “Just, like, the kinda thing, like, some old leg, no fingers and, like, a head wound on it, but baked (laughs). It’s soft, something like foetal alcohol syndrome and six brown crayons.” Maybe that means something to you? Maybe it doesn’t. Much like his films, the guy’s all manic thought-rush, fumbled words and overlapping ideas, peppered with an infectious laugh, a raspy hehehe, kinda like that cartoon dog . Spring Breakers , his new movie, which perhaps you haven’t seen yet but definitely already know everything about, finally opened in local cinemas on Thursday. We talked briefly about it, and asses, and meatballs. _ Junkee: Spring break initially seemed like an odd choice of subject matter for you. Can you tell me a bit about where the idea first came from? Harmony Korine: Um, I had just been collecting stuff, like some spring break imagery; photographs where you could see kids going off the rails on the beaches of Flor ...

The writer and director of the films Trash Humpers , Mister Lonely , Julien Donkey-Boy , and Gummo , most recently he helmed Spring Breakers , which was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. A Crack Up at the Race Riots , his debut novel, was originally published by Mainstreet/Doubleday in 1998, and has recently been rereleased by Drag City. As unconventional as any of his films, the book presents a multimedia assemblage of text both printed and handwritten, drawings, photographs, news clippings, suicide notes, celebrity gossip, appropriated material, lists, diagrams, ideas for books and films, as well as stories and scenes that are at times humorous and at times disturbing, but always provocative and engaging. At the time of A Crack Up at the Race Riots ’s initial publication, Korine explained the book to David Letterman as “the great American choose-your-own-adventure novel.” I recently sat down with Korine to discuss the rerelease of A Crack Up at the Race Riots . Since you wrote the book fifteen years ago, I wonder how you feel about it now. Do you still feel close to it, or does it seem like a distant memory? I think both. I was about twenty-three when I wrote it, but it’s still pretty close to how I think now. It sets up a lot of the themes and ideas that I would start to work on later. I definitely see some connections and through-li ...

As the ultra-violent movie -- starring Disney Channel tween queens Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens along with a Britney-singing James Franco -- gears up to expand nationally on Friday, director Korine battled a sore throat to talk to Salon about whether his movie glorifies or deplores gun violence and whether he's a sellout now.
