CHICAGO (CBS) — Four months after Hadiya Pendleton’s murder, her parents continue to work toward making Chicago’s streets safer. Their story will be featured on CBS’ “48 Hours” this weekend, a program which will focus on violence in Chicago and the suburbs. The Pendletons opened up their home, giving “48 Hours” unparalleled access to some of their family’s most intimate moments as they grieved the loss of their daughter. The show’s producers and reporters spent two weeks straight with the family, shadowing them morning, noon and night. They were there when they traveled to Washington, D.C. to speak to Congress about gun violence. Cleopatra and Nathaniel Pendleton continue reaching out to others who have lost loved ones to violence or have been victims themselves. “Everyone who doesn’t have a voice,” Mr. Pendleton says, “we’re trying to be their voice.” Cleopatra Pendleton says remembering all victims of violence is a first step. Preventing additional deaths is the goal. “We still have to get programs in place to help troubled youth, teens and young adults to ensure that an overall difference is actually made. So I just think we’re in the early stages of making that difference.” Mrs. Pendleton says they have heard amazing stories from other Chicagoans, and while they are advocates for others, their own pain is always present.
