“A callous gunman blasted away at a city bus in Queens on Saturday, killing a 14-year-old girl riding inside,” nydailynews.com reports. “Police sources said the unidentified shooter fired off up to 10 shots at the Q6 bus as it idled by a bus stop near Baisley Pond Park on Sutphin Boulevard and Rockaway Boulevard in South Jamaica just after 8:45 p.m.” Once again, I’d bet dollars to donuts that the shooter had a criminal record and was gang-affiliated. So even if this shooting wasn’t gang related, it was. In fact, it’s time for a quick reminder that America doesn’t have a Gun problem. We have a gang problem . . . To see “Gun violence” stats in context, pull suicides out of the roughly 30k firearms-related deaths in the U.S . (e.g. 2011). That leaves some 20k firearms-related homicides. So how many of these are gang-related? No one knows for sure. But let’s just say Queens police aren’t seeing a whole lot of people without criminal records, say, shooting and killing a 14-year-old girl on a bus. Actually we can do a little better than that. Gun rights advocates like to point out that the cities with the most murders are the ones with the most draconian firearms laws. Chicago’s ruling political class seems especially proud of all of the “layers of security” their strict Gun control offers their residents. We see it as keeping the law-abiding good guys from being able to defend themselves from violent, predatory criminals running free without any deterrence in the form of knowing a victim might shoot back. Drugs can kill users. Drug warriors can kill anybody. A CBS report on street violence in Chicago makes clear that a major cause -- if not the major cause -- of these deaths is because drug gangs are fighting over turf. Jack Riley, the DEA chief for Chicago, says that he is absolutely sure that most the Gun deaths are part of the fight for drug turf. This is absolutely true and drug warriors like Jack Riley are responsible for the fight. Consider what Riley considers a success for drug warriors: the arrest of drug dealers and the confiscation of their product. What exactly does this success do? If they are successful enough to reduce the street supply of drugs they increase the price of drugs. The first thing that happens is that they give windfall profits to all the dealers who they didn't arrest. They didn't hurt those dealers, they rewarded them. Second, the increased profits make drug dealing more attractive. Riley and his crew strap on their SWAT outfits, prepared for battled. They're armed, dangerous and prepared to kill. The DEA is willing to use war-like violence. This will drive out peaceful dealers and the more placid distributors. But with massive profits created by the DEA all they do is attract more and more violent dealers to the market. The more violent the DEA is willing to be, the more violent the dealers will be. This is in addition to Dickinson’s AB 760, which would impose a five cent tax on every round of ammunition sold in California. Ironically, the tax would be more expensive than the actual bullets. If Dickinson’s bill passes, the cost of bullets in California will go through the roof. So sales will go through the roof in California until the tax goes into effect, then sales in Arizona, Nevada, and Oregon will peak along the border. California will have to spend what little revenue they gain on measures to stop smugglers who bring ammo in to sell on the black market. So they'll raise the tax rate again...and their local vendors suffer, shed employees, and go out of business. Don't these idiots have anything better to do than fuck up their economy any worse than it already is? ...
