Guillermo del Toro Talks Getting Back in the Director’s Chair, the Evolution of the Script, Creating the World on a Giant Scale, and More on the Set of PACIFIC RIM

Source: collider.com --- Wednesday, June 19, 2013
Like all of you, I'm a huge fan of Guillermo del Toro. I think he's one of the best directors working in the business, and watching him struggle to get a film made the past few years has been awful (he last directed 2008's Hellboy II: The Golden Army). However, the long wait is finally over. On July 12th, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures will release Pacific Rim, and I couldn't be more excited to see it. Last year when del Toro and his team were filming in Toronto, I got to visit the set with a few other online reporters. During a break in filming, del Toro sat down with us for an extended interview. During a wide- ranging conversation, he talked about how the project came together, how the script changed along the way, the world of Pacific Rim, the MPAA, the monsters and the robots, the visual style, and so much more. If you're a fan of del Toro, you'll love what he had to say. Hit the jump for more. Question: It’s been a while since you’ve been in the director’s chair. Guillermo del Toro: Four years, yeah. As fans we’re so excited, but for you, can you talk about finally being on a set of this huge, monster, awesome looking movie? del Toro: It was really going from 0 to 100 miles in no time, but the good thing is in the space between movies I prepped some huge movies. Working on [At the Mountains of Madness], Hobbit - were great sort of ... ...

Ron Perlman Talks Developing His Own Character, Practical Effects vs. CG, His Relationship with Guillermo del Toro, & More on the Set of PACIFIC RIM

Source: collider.com --- Wednesday, June 19, 2013
If you're searching for the brain, heart, bones, or any of the vital organs from a freshly killed Kaiju, you would end up making a deal with Hannibal Chow (Ron Perlman). The reason is he's got the exclusive contract on the fallen monsters after the Jaegers kill the beasts in battle. And from what I saw when I visited the set of Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim last year, business is booming. During a break in filming, I got to participate in a group interview with Ron Perlman. He talked about his character, the way he talks and looks, getting cast, collaborating with del Toro, the practical sets, and so much more. Hit the jump for what he had to say. Question: Did you have to be in Sons of Anarchy to get this job? RON PERLMAN: Yes. Because there’s a few of you... PERLMAN: It seems as though everything works for a reason, so I’ll just say “yes” to everything… as long as it’s a yes or no question. You obviously have a great relationship with Guillermo [del Toro]. Talk a little bit about when he presented you with this project and asked you to be involved. PERLMAN: I’m not exactly sure of the sequence of events with regard to this. But I actually think this character was designed to be played by another ethnicity other than myself. And somewhere along the way, he had the notion, “Wouldn’t it be interesting to turn this guy into more of an invention.” So, in other words, somebody takes on ... ...

It would also be del Toro’s first movie as a director in five years having spent that time developing other movies like The Hobbit and At the Mountains of Madness - both of which didn’t pan out. Peter Jackson and H.P. Lovecraft’s loss is our gain, because the idea of Guillermo making a giant monster movie is almost literally every giant monster movie fanboy’s wettest dream since Guillermo has been involved with some of the coolest and craziest horror movies released in the past 20 years. (Not many people have realized or mentioned this, but 2013 also marks the 20th Anniversary of his feature directorial debut, the Spanish vampire movie Cronos .) He already has Corey Stoll cast in the lead, alongside Kevin Durand, Jonathan Hyde, Mia Maestro and Richard Sammel, but now John Hurt has joined the cast as Professor Abraham Setrakian. Hurt, of course, played a professor dealing with the supernatural for del Toro before in Hellboy , where he was Professor Bruttenholm and Hellboy's adopted dad. He's in similarly academic mode here, as a Holocaust survivor who becomes key when an ancient vampire comes to New York and starts spreading his contagion. Setrakian, it emerges, encountered this danger before in a concentration camp during World War II, and he is able to guide the authorities - including Corey Stoll's Dr Ephraim Goodweather of the CDC - as they try to discover just what caused a plane full of people to turn up dead or dying when they landed in New York. Clue: it's not the fish they had for dinner. The pilot will shoot later this summer, with del Toro directing, and then producer Carlton Cuse will showrun a series with del Toro if all goes well.
