Source: ihogeek.com --- Wednesday, June 05, 2013
<img src="http://internationalhouseofgeek.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/guacamelee_logo.jpg?w=470&h=261" & width="150" & height="83" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />Indie titles have been gaining tons of traction lately. With titles like Minecraft and Bastion showing AAA companies and gamers that you don’t need a staff of hundreds to create high quality products, more people have been willing to give good ole indies a try. And that’s how I stumbled upon Guacamelee . I needed something to play on a plane ride and after downloading Final Fantasy VI for the fifth time, I decided I wanted a change. I’d heard the name before, but only knew it was an indie title having something to do with luchadors. On a $15 whim, I downloaded it and played it on my Vita. Is it as entertaining as the title suggests, or would I wish I had just said nah-chos? Guacamelee stars Juan Aguacate, an agave farmer with a magic luchador mask on a mission to save his childhood friend and possible love interest, who also happens to be El Presidente’s daughter, from the evil undead skeleton Calaca. The story not only features Mexican folklore, but embraces is wholly and gives its own take. From the land of the dead to the building architecture and casual Spanish, this game really takes on the culture of Mexico and makes it accessible by having fun with it. This game not only pulls from Mexican folklore, but from internet and video game culture for its jokes. With luchador posters featuring the likenesses of Bane and Batman to Super Meat Boy and Mega Man, and even Grumpy CAt, this game has so many in-jokes, you’re always lookin ...

This means the DLC won't launch today as planned. The patch bugs out in save games after acquiring the "Pollo Power," making it impossible for players to leave chicken mode and essentially blocking progress. The patch was live long enough for some players to download it, and Drinkbox says it may have automatically downloaded for PlayStation Plus members last night. To fix the issue, PS3 players can delete Guacamelee entirely and re-download it, and Vita players can save to the cloud, then delete and re-download the game. "We hope to release a fix for the patch (as well as the downloadable content) as soon as possible," Drinkbox says. "Really sorry about this!" Guacamelee costume DLC pulled to fix 'Pollo Power' glitch originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 04 Jun 2013 15:30:00 EST.

Source: www.fearnet.com --- Monday, May 20, 2013
One of these days I’m going to rub the back of my neck, and I’ll finally feel that implant that the gaming industry has managed to sneak onto my body during one of the alcohol-induced benders of my youth. At some point, in between the 11 th and 12 th shot of Wild Turkey, I was hauled into a van and chipped like a bear in Yellowstone Park so that my brainwaves can be scanned and a game that somehow manages to scratch every weird itch I have can be developed and released. It first happened in the early 2000s with Bloodrayne , a title featuring a feisty redheaded vampire clad in black leather slaughtering the Third Reich, and now it’s happening again with Guacamelee , which combines Metroidvania-structured platforming with the dizzying delirium of lucha libre cinema. From its birth lucha libre struck a chord with Mexico, becoming a bizarre pop culture phenomenon that saw the biggest stars of the sport starring in countless films. These luchadors were revered in their native country, and the heroic technicos (I’m not gonna get into the deeper aspects of it, otherwise we’ll be here a while) would find time to solve mysteries and fight the supernatural between exhibition matches. El Santo, Blue Demon, Mil Mascaras, and others would face off against zombies, Aztec mummies, vampires, and werewolves, usually in kicky 1960s outfits and always with their masks firmly laced to their heads. It’s a fascinating slice of pop culture history ...

Source: www.guardian.co.uk --- Tuesday, May 14, 2013
PS3 PS Vita; Drinkbox; £10 Remember Super Metroid? Indie developer Drinkbox certainly does, but with their latest PSN title they've decided that what Nintendo's classic really needed was fewer bounty hunters and space pirates, and a whole lot more sombreros. Guacamelee follows the adventures of barrel-chested agave farmer Juan as he attempts to rescue the daughter of "El Presidente" from the clutches of evil skeleton bandit Carlos Calaca, a quest that begins quite badly when Juan is immediately killed in his first confrontation. All is not lost though, as the game takes a quick rummage through the big bag of crazy plot contrivances and pulls out a magical wrestling mask, which instantly resurrects Juan as a superpowered Luchadore. Thus equipped, Juan sets out across a beautifully stylised version of rural Mexico, to rescue the damsel, beat up all the baddies and generally be all heroic and stuff. Mechanically, Guacamelee plays very similarly to the Metroid and Castlevania titles it's primarily paying homage to. Juan runs and jumps his way through the non-linear 2D stages, battling Calaca's various skeletal minions and locating the necessary upgrades to his powers that will allow him access to new areas (these powers are mainly acquired by locating and smashing "Chozo" statues, in another nod to its inspiration). Upgrades range from the faintly ridiculous, like Juan's morph-ball-esque ability to fit through small spaces by turning ...

GameSpot awarded Guacamelee a 9.0 in its review , saying the game "is so full of personality and challenging gameplay that it's a shame it ever has to end." Tomb Raider, Terraria, Grand Theft Auto IV, and Borderlands 2 rounded out the top five PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Network games downloaded via the US PlayStation Store. Over in Europe, which charts PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Network titles separately, Journey was in second, followed by Hitman: Blood Money HD in third, Crysis in fourth, and The Walking dead in fifth. Guacamelee also topped the PS Vita charts, followed by quirky role-playing game Soul Sacrifice. Dragon Fantasy Book was third. The Nuketown Zombies and Revolution map packs for Call of Duty: Black Ops II were first and second in the DLC chart.
