The Green Bay Packers are no strangers to safeties with neck injuries, as former all-pro safety Nick Collins had his career cut short due to a freak neck injury suffered in week 2 of the 2011 season. Now, the Packers are living through a similar situation with second-year safety Sean Richardson, who made the team as a rookie free agent from Vanderbilt last offseason but had to undergo surgery in January for a cervical disk herniation. Richardson suffered the injury back on November 25 in a game against the New York Giants, according to PackersNews.com , ending his rookie season after just 110 snaps and four tackles. The injury came at a particularly unfortunate time for Richardson, who just started to see game action for Green Bay after Charles Woodson was sidelined with his own injury. Both the Packers and Richardson are optimistic that the injury is not as serious as the one that cost Collins his playing career back in 2011 but at this point that's all both sides can be is optimistic. “It’s just a tough call right now,” Packers safeties coach Darren Perry said to PackersNews.com . “You like him, and I hope like hell we can have him, but some things are out of our control and we just have to wait and see on him. “Obviously, he’s a guy that when you look at him, you see a lot of potential. The news became official on Monday as the Green Bay Packers announced that they had informed inside linebacker Desmond Bishop of his release after the sixth-year linebacker from Cal could not agree to a restructured contract with the team and no trade parters were to be found. Thus, the Packers made their decision. With two other starting caliber linebackers in A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones, Green Bay simply didn't feel comfortable investing almost $4 million in a player coming off a serious hamstring injury when it has two healthy alternatives readily available on the roster. Certainly the Packers will miss Bishop. They will miss the physical presence he brings to the field, as well as his ability to rush the passer on both inside and outside blitzes. But truth be told, the Packers couldn't be sure they would ever get the same old Bishop back. The Bishop that posted 115 tackles and five sacks in 2011 may never be seen again, the freak injury in a preseason game in San Diego last August saw to that. The IDP landscape was dealt it’s second big seismic shift of the 2013 offseason on Monday. Green Bay Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop , who missed the entire 2012 season with a severe hamstring injury, was released by the team according to Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel . The 28-year-old Bishop had 115 tackles, five sacks and two forced fumbles in 13 games for the Packers in 2011. The Ball Says: Most pundits (myself included) feel that this release, which has been rumored for some time, has to have something to do with the hamstring, as Bishop’s salary isn’t exorbitant and Green Bay already cut D.J. Smith loose earlier in the offseason.
