Zhuowei Zhang has stepped in with a complete list of what's under the hood, and it turns out that some of those features work... more or less. After modding the latest Glass firmware, Android Police can confirm that there is a functional Chrome browser lurking inside; Google just hasn't woven it into the user experience. Other Labs features produce similarly mixed results. OK Glass Everywhere lets users easily start a voice command chain from anywhere in the interface, but a video stabilization mode clearly isn't ready for prime time. Although you'll want to visit the source links for the full rundown, it's evident from just a cursory glimpse that Glass has plenty of room to grow. According to Android Police , this new feature initiates an “always listen mode.” Glass still has to be on, but now users won’t have to return to the main screen to give a voice command. Additional features can be enabled, including the “wink to take a picture” feature —which we’ve known about for a while now — and a Web browsing flag that simply does not work at the moment. Remember, this is highly experimental software, which is why everything from slightly buggy to downright broken features are to be expected. To see the newly discovered labs features in action, check out the video below: Earlier this week, Google shared that winning #ifihadglass applicants will start receiving invitations to try Glass “over the next few weeks.” Sadly, if you are not among the lucky few selected by Google, it doesn’t look like you’ll get your hands on Glass any time soon — the company says it isn’t “taking any more applications right now.” ...

Will Google (And The US Government) Permit Google Glass To Recognize Faces On Sight?

Who's that?" TechCrunch has a nice look at a new API from Lambda Labs, an "early-stage startup" (meaning, brand-new) from San Francisco, that's causing a bit of consternation. Lambda Labs makes a facial recognition API, which you can actually try out here in your browser. But now Lambda has released a version of that API specifically for Google Glass. There are certain software restrictions that hold back what the hardware can do--in this case, you can't use the facial recognition API to get a real-time identification. Instead, you have to take a picture, send it to the app's developers for it to be analyzed, and then receive the ID. That doesn't take long, but it's not exactly a Robocop-level ID system. But the Glass hardware is capable of that kind of real-time information flow, to a degree. Glass isn't an augmented reality system; it's more like a tiny notifications screen in the corner of your field of view. You won't see a face with a name under it, but you might see a face, then tilt your eyes up and to the left and see text with an ID on it. The bigger and perhaps more interesting issue here is whether this will fly with Google and the US government. In a New York Times article , Steve Lee, director of project management for Google Glass, said: "We've consistently said that we won't add new face recognition features to our services unless we have strong privacy protections in p ...

New intel has surfaced that Samsung will be providing the OLED displays for the consumer version of the Google Glass wearable computer. Here's a quote with the details, Quote: The current versions of Glass, which Google has so far sold to developers and enthusiasts through the Explorer program, is said to feature a liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) microdisplay, though official technical information isn’t available. If the report is accurate, Samsung will provide OLED on silicon displays to replace the LCOS technology. OLEDs (organic light emitting diodes) require no backlighting, as liquid crystal displays do, which may let Google save space in the Glass by removing the lighting source. In addition, OLEDs have lower power requirements than LCDs, which is important in applications where the size of the battery is limited, such as Glass. At the Society for Information Display convention in Vancouver, Samsung Display’s CEO hinted at this collaboration: “OLED on silicon may be used for glasses-type, augmented-reality devices much like the Google Glass”. The executive went on to say that Samsung’s flexible OLED technology could be used in other wearable devices, such as smartwatches and health bands. Sources told Android Authority ahead of Google I/O that the Mountain View company is working on a smartwatch that has been dem ...

Use the device for something like capturing long videos, however, and battery life can drop to as low as just “a couple of hours.” The version tested by earlier reviewers was just a prototype though, and Glass fans are hoping that Google will improve the device’s efficiency before launching it. But according to recent comments from Google cofounder Sergey Brin, that may not be the case. In its deep dive into Google’s X Lab, Bloomberg Businessweek spoke with Brin about a number of things “Google X” is working on. Glass is clearly the division’s most widely publicized project, and Brin made an interesting, possibly troubling comment while discussing it. From the report: “Asked about Google Glass, a project he championed and which he has been photographed testing on the New York City subway, he points to the device perched on his nose and says, ‘You know, this is basically done.’ “ There are a few ways to interpret that comment. One interpretation suggests that while the “Explorer” models currently in use are prototypes, an updated version that is “basically done” exists withi ...
