Godzilla crew remade Steveston’s Japanese Cultural Centre/Martial Arts Centre into the JanJira International School for filming on Wednesday, adding fake pink cherry blossoms to the east side of the trees outside and parking a prop Japanese school bus and giant blue screen on the west side where the camera would focus. Dozens of child extras dressed in school uniforms practiced running out of the centre into the bus or towards Moncton Street. And had fun doing it. It’s not clear where the monster is in this scene because it’s unlikely they would run towards it. The kids had so much fun pretending to run away from Godzilla. Godzilla’s main unit is spending three afternoon/evenings this week filming in Finn Slough on the Fraser River dressed as a Japanese fishing village in a nuclear quarantine zone. It didn’t take much set dressing to get the right look. Finn Slough in Steveston is a historic collection of houses on stilts, float houses, net sheds and drying racks left over from a Finnish fishing village founded in the late 19th century. All that was needed was vines of bamboo to cover up any signs of the 30-odd residents living there today. The addition of a few falling-apart float homes and Japanese gates. Long black tubes to fill the air with smoke. And lots and lots of quarantine and nuclear zone exclusion signs Camera crew motored into the slough yesterday afternoon from the river on a flat boat with a technocrane, snaking their way into the condemned village in take after take. You can't really separate the titular beast from his origins as a uniquely Japanese metaphor, and some unofficial images from the set of next year's Godzilla indicate that the remake won't try to completely remove Gojira from his native country. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have pegged this new Godzilla for nationwide release on May 16, 2014, almost sixteen years to the day after Sony Pictures' still-mocked 1998 attempt to Americanize and blockbusterize Toho's iconic monster. Gareth Edwards , who made a big impression with his low-budget 2010 feature Monsters , steps up to a big studio picture here. He's got a tremendous cast of actors to go up against the real star, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson , Elizabeth Olsen , Bryan Cranston , Ken Watanabe , and Juliette Binoche all getting in on the action. Picking up from where we left off yesterday, let's take a closer look at the many parts that make up this incredible playset. On the side of the box, we see the contents listed: I suppose we could just follow the order they suggest. Let's start with "GIANT Godzilla"! As the star of the set, Godzilla is around 5" tall, and solid, non-posable plastic, with a hollowed-out area in his belly, which is probably for molding purposes, and to keep the figure from being overly heavy. It isn't visible from any angle,as you can see. His feet don't stand flat, making his stance a little lopsided, but they captured the lumbering qualities and heaviness of his walk very well. Next we have the other star, the one HG Toys created, the Tricephalon Monster. He is equal parts fish, turtle, and dinosaur, and I have previously noted his comparison to King Ghidorah. The artwork ( also used for the largest of their puzzles ) shows his heads and necks to be metallic, but here they give the impression of being scaly and plated like the rest of his body. He's 7" long, and is also hollow under his belly. His green hue of plastic is a little different from Godzilla's, which was a nice touch. There is one case (you can see it on You Tube even) of a Tricephalon monster being found made of red plastic.
