Source: www.yugatech.com --- Monday, May 20, 2013
<img src="http://www.yugatech.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/front1.jpg" & width="150" & height="100" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />Earlier last week, a retro-inspired digital camera has dropped by our HQ – the Fujifilm FinePix X100S and is looking to impress us right from the get go. We immediately took it for a spin and here’s our initial thoughts about it. For those who’ve already seen or used (or still using) the X100, the X100S will be a familiar sight as not much have changed on its design. However, for the benefit of those who haven’t used any of these cameras, let me give you a quick tour on the X100S’ body. Design and Construction Both top and base of the camera is made of die-cast magnesium alloy that is both durable and lightweight. Together with the black Polyurethane grip and old-school layout, this gives the X100S a retro look and feel that is reminiscent to a 70’s camera. Differentiating the successor from the predecessor can be quite tricky. In fact the only immediately noticeable difference between the two is the “S” logo at the bottom right of the latest iteration. This logo is placed on top of the Polyurethane grip which pretty much covers the bottom half of the front portion of the camera. Over to the right side of the S-logo is the Focus Switch that lets you choose from three focus settings; Manual Focus, Autofocus-Continuous and Autofocus-Single (in descending order). The arrangement of these selections is another minute adjustment that Fuji has done to improve the X100S’ overall handling. A good portion of the front panel is occupied by ...

Source: www.mountainphotographer.com --- Thursday, May 16, 2013
Bonfire Under the Stars : Prints Available This last weekend we drove out to Cedar Mesa, Utah for one last desert camping trip for the season. We arrived a few hours prior to sunset, found a nice spot to car camp, and eventually lit a little fire to enjoy. After being glued to the computer the last few weeks, the fire, stars, and open space were balm for my soul! The next morning we would wake up early and embark on a three-day backpacking loop through Fish Creek and Owl Creek Canyons. For this trip I decided to leave my workhorse Canon camera and lenses at home, instead opting to travel light with only my new little Fujifilm X100S large sensor compact camera. These three days in the canyons provided a good opportunity to get to know the X100S. Since it’s a popular new camera I will write a “mini review” of my first impressions below, and this post will be more of a camera report than a trip report. All these photos were taken with the X100S, but please note that some are stitched panos and most of them are adjusted in photoshop to some degree. The photo above is a two-shot stitch taken with the X100 28mm wide-angle conversion lens (the X100S has a fixed 35mm equivalent lens, and the 28mm conversion lens screws on top of that). Hiking past one of the many attractive pools along Fish Creek Canyon. It’s best to camp the first night somewhere mid-canyon like here rather than continuing to the confluence which is drier and less photogenic ...

I had grown to love the X100, I had grown used to the quirks and foibles of the original incarnation and learned to focus on the positives, as they were plenty. The X100S may look almost identical to the original X100 but in short it is a completely different animal (photographically speaking). The X100S is a phenomenal leap in performance and image quality to the original X100, the new X-Trans sensor is brilliant and especially shines in low light environments and as a result I am using it for literally everything. Although the X100S is only out a few months I have already taken it to most of the counties in Northern Ireland (and also Donegal). I’ve used in every weather condition Ireland can throw at it in this very long Winter of Spring. I have used it up mountains on the Northern Ireland coast, in City Hall and the dark Belfast pubs and the X100S has yet to let me down. This was the first shot I took on a pre-production X100S one early December morning on the Whiterocks beach in Northern Ireland’s County Antrim. I was struck at just how quickly the camera performed and just how sharp the image was even at 100% zoom. This photo was taken a few month later on the long path to Murlough beach, this time in County Down. This was a rare sunny day following the Spring blizzard and it was the first time I had seen the Mourne mountains caked with snow to such low levels, ...
