With a workforce of more than one million, the electronics giant Foxconn has enough Workers in its Chinese factories to fill a small country. So it's fitting that the company has vowed to make its manufacturing kingdom a bit more democratic by encouraging union elections. But although the company announced its push for union democracy in February, a subsequent study by academics in Hong Kong and mainland China reveals that many Workers don't even know whether they're in a union, and many others don't have a clear idea of what their union does or how it works. And that actually makes perfect sense, since China's unions are ill-defined, bureaucratized institutions --politically ineffective by design. The union plan is part of a host of promised reforms that followed public scrutiny of Foxconn's premiere client, Apple . Seventeen people were injured when struck by lightning on Luofu Mountain in Huizhou on April 30, Nanfang Daily reports. The incident happened at around 2 p.m. when the party was descending the mountain at about 800 meters above sea level. Seven of the injured have been discharged from hospital, nine are still in hospital in Changning Village and one has been transferred to Guangzhou eye hospital. Thirty year-old Luo Bo, from Guangyuan in Sichuan Province, was leading the party of colleagues from the Foxconn factory in Longxi Village. During a thunderstorm, they took shelter under a rock when lightning struck. Luo was the first to come round and he saw that his colleague, Gong Xinli, was the most seriously injured. He was lying prostrate on the ground and there was blood on his neck and coming out of his nose. Two of their female colleagues were unconscious. Foxconn has found itself once more embroiled in a suicide scandal after two apparent staff suicide attempts within four days were witnessed by Workers from the company's Zhengzhou plant in central China's Henan province. The two factory worker, one male and one female, attempted suicide by jumping from buildings between April 24 and April 27. The man has died, while the fate of the woman remains unknown. Sources claim that the Zhengzhou factory entered "silent mode" from the beginning of April, restricting Workers from discussing anything unrelated to work while on company premises. Two Workers have committed suicide at an iPhone factory, according to China Labor Watch. PatentlyApple conveys the news to the world, noting that both Workers jumped off of buildings to their demise. Two suicides occurred at a Foxconn iPhone assembly plant in Zhengzhou, on April 24 and 27, respectively.
