It’s Basically Official: Foxconn Is Making Screens For iWatches

Source: www.2oceansvibe.com --- Tuesday, May 21, 2013
The rumour mill seems to be working overtime for the Apple iWatch. Is it happening? Isn’t it happening? When will it happen? This is the latest, Foxconn (Taiwanese multinational electronics contract manufacturing company) is already building the iWatch and with an OLED display. Reports are suggesting that the display screen is OLED (organic light-emitting diode), which in theory provides better power consumption and may do something for Apple’s reputation for being known for using LCD IPS displays. Maybe this means that Apple is making a move from its traditional LCD displays. With Android smartwatches using OLED displays successfully, it would seem likely that Apple would use this display rather than the poor quality e-links display on the Pebble. Economic Daily News are sugessting that Apple is indeed using OLED displays as a trial for the iWatch. A possible reason for the switch of the screen displays, is that OPED has touch sensors already baked into the glass, significantly better than having a seperate multi touch layer. These displays have been manufactured by RiTdisplay in Taiwan. Another report from the same publication, has said that Foxconn has already received orders for the iWatch. Not bulk orders but rather “small-scale trial testing.” So it seems Apple and Foxconn are manufacturing the iWatch as a trial basis. To further fuel the rumour, Apple hired a senior OLED expert at the beginning of this year. But remember t ...

The news follows a disturbing trend of deaths at the Zhengzhou plants, which manufacture parts for Apple, Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard. According to China Labour Watch, the first in the latest series of suicides occurred on 24 April when a 24-year-old male worker reportedly jumped to his death from his dorm building. He had been working at the company for just two days. Since then, on 27 April a 23-year-old female worker jumped off the twelfth floor of her apartment building, while in May a 30-year-old worker jumped off a building. In recent months Foxconn has faced increasing criticism over factory safety, working conditions, and living conditions, which were so bad that at one point the company had to implement anti-suicide nets in some of its buildings. Chinese police are investigating the incidents, but Foxconn said the two deaths in Zhengzhou were unrelated to work matters, according to a company internal review. {loadposition dswan}"Suicide is a complex issue," the company said in statement, "there is no one reason that can ever be cited for any such incident." New York-based China Labor Watch also reported that a fourth worker had jumped to his death on April 24 near the company's Zhengzhou campus, but Foxconn said the employee was in fact a 24-year-old man who had only applied for a ...

Unfortunately, it appears that three more individuals may have decided to end their lives, something that has been an ongoing problem at Foxconn amid reports of poor working conditions. These are three separate incidents that occurred within the past four weeks, according to PCWorld . The first occured on April 27 when a worker employed at the Foxconn factory in Zhengzhou fell to his death. It happened again at the same plant on May 14. In between those two incidents, a worker at Foxconn's Chongqing facility was found dead on May 11. Police are investigating all three incidents, though Foxconn says the two deaths in Zhengzhou had nothing to do with work. "Suicide is a complex issue, there is no one reason that can ever be cited for any such incident," Foxconn said in a statement. These latest incidents come on the heels of an audit by the U.S.-based Fair Labor Association (FLA), which noted "significant progress" in reducing employee working time to 60 hours per week at three separate facilities in Shenzhen and Chengdu. However, Foxconn's goal is to reduce that number to 49 hours, which it hopes to do by July of this year. Foxconn employs over 1.2 million people in China. The company manufacturers electronic devices for Apple, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and several other well known companies. One w ...

The reported deaths -- involving a 30-year-old married man, a 23-year-old woman and 24-year-old man -- revive the specter of a wave of suicides that have struck the firm's Chinese workforce in recent years. Following the suicide deaths of at least 13 Chinese workers at its plants in 2010, Taiwan's Foxconn instituted reforms, including significant pay raises. Shares of Foxconn Group companies fell on Monday following the news. Hong Kong-listed Foxconn International Holdings Ltd. lost 1.8%, while in Taipei, Foxconn Technology Co. lost 0.3%, and Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. dropped 0.6%.
