Director/writer Todd Phillips' filmmaking career has been fairly inconsistent so far, but the peaks and positive results have always been hilariously effective. The past year in the local Fashion event industry has been playing out like a game of musical chairs, and not to be left out, the Portland Fashion & Style Awards —which I criticized at length for being awesomely out of touch when it debuted last year—has also fallen into new hands. Steve and Anne Akre and producer Jaileene Eubanks have declared their commitment to "bringing in qualified Fashion industry judges... and a qualified Fashion industry advisory board team." But the new web site still gives me major sads: I consulted informally with the Akres earlier this year, and tried to be very honest about what I saw as fatal flaws of the original event. In short, the awards are completely meaningless gaudy paperweights if they don't represent an informed recognition of the individuals and businesses who are truly putting Portland on the Fashion and style map. What's more, I'm not convinced there's a particular need for an awards ceremony at all, and what would be more valuable than physical awards at this point—and might actually get people to care—would be monetary or otherwise useful prizes, like credits to a good fabric store for designers, for example. We all know NY Fashion week can be a bit obnoxious—the scantily clad models, uber expensive clothing, and wanna be stylisits drive us crazy—yet we keep coming back year after year. But according to the New York Times , not everyone has similar sentiments. Residents and environmental groups in the New York area have filed a suit against the city and Lincoln Center, demanding they give Fashion week the boot. The suit states that the $32 million generated from the city’s July 2010 license agreement with Lincoln Center is not going back into the city, but rather Lincoln Center. “These actions constitute an illegal alienation of Damrosch Park in violation of the New York State Public Trust Doctrine and other laws,” said NYC Park Advocates, a nonprofit watchdog group. Fashion week generating $865 million each year and creates Fashion-related jobs. In honor of the most recent delivery of new 50+ apparel, here's a new thread to display/discuss your new threads. I will begin with my new 50+ wind vest. If you did not order one... well it's a shame. It's about the most versatile thing you can have besides a multi-tool. My size XXL fits a little more snugly than some of my other vests but it should work just fine in most situations but probably not if used over bulky clothing. The 50+ logos on the shoulders are a very nice touch and the collar zips up nice and high to keep out the wind. Front is windproof nylon stuff but backside is a mesh to vent the heat produced by my massive wattage. Unlike some other vests, the zipper on the back is not a pocket, it's a pass through to allow access to to jersey pockets. I think I will like that because six pockets tends to lead to chaos when trying to reach back and find stuff. Three pockets ought to be enough. I have always liked the placement of the "dulcius ex asperis" slogan on the collar but cannot find a "HTFU" imprint anywhere on the vest. Oh, well.... Zipper on the front does not open from the bottom. It is gray and blustery here today so a test ride is in order.... more later. It has also given the creatives among us an idea for a business venture. Ex art school student Grace Stubbs has recently launched the first line of her sports Fashion label Don’t Talk To Strangers . Branded as DT2S for short, the label sets out to incorporate graphic design and print with some cool colours to create a fun and unique brand, with the range constantly expanding and new logo designs are always being created for future lines. DT2S seeks to represent alternative sports such as ski, snowboarding, surfing and gymnastics, with items such as beanies, hoodies and jumpers in the initial range. “My inspiration did not specifically come from my course, it came from the alternative atmosphere and 24 hour buzz around art school.
