Source: baseball.realgm.com --- Wednesday, May 22, 2013
The assumption was that Jacoby Ellsbury would return to MVP-caliber form this season with free agency approaching. Ellsbury is batting .241 with a .303 on-base percentage. He has only one home run and it came on April 7 in Toronto. He leads the league with 13 stolen bases and the majors with 208 plate appearances, but also has produced 147 outs, most in the majors. "I wouldn't say he's pressing," John Farrell said. "How do you differentiate pressing and frustrated? Because it feels like he's gotten pitches that he hasn't squared up. He's just missed them, so there's a little frustration. I wouldn't say he's pressing to the point of something's ticking on him, time is ticking. No. He's a good player, and we've got to get him back to that level." ...

Source: bostonherald.com --- Wednesday, May 22, 2013
CHICAGO — If Shane Victorino was healthy, slumping Jacoby Ellsbury may not still be the Red Sox leadoff hitter. With Ellsbury mired in a 4-for-27 funk that has lowered his on-base percentage to .307, manager John Farrell admitted yesterday to considering dropping him down in the batting order. But Victorino, the Sox’ most viable leadoff-hitting alternative, has been hampered by assorted injuries, most recently a tight left hamstring that had him sidelined again last night. ...

Source: blogs.providencejournal.com --- Tuesday, May 21, 2013
By Tim Britton CHICAGO -- Jacoby Ellsbury is still leading off for the Red Sox. It's not clear for how much longer that will be the case. "I've considered it, yes," manager John Farrell said when asked about the idea of dropping the slumping Ellsbury in the order. "We're sticking with him to hopefully give him the opportunity to come out of the situation he's in right now. But I can say this: Whether he's hitting first or whether he's hitting somewhere else in the lineup, there are still things we have to address and he has to address. Those are ongoing." Ellsbury went 0-for-4 on Monday night with all four at-bats ending in groundouts to second. He has only eight hits in his last 60 at-bats, and his on-base percentage is hovering just above .300. "It comes down to timing -- timing at the plate -- whether it's four groundballs to second base or whether it's three line drives to third base," Farrell said. "He's in a situation where he's working to do what he can to get out of this and we're working there with him. This isn't a matter of effort. It's a matter of maybe being a little bit more free of mind and letting that natural ability take over." Dropping Ellsbury in the order isn't unprecedented. Ellsbury was dropped from first to eighth in the order at the end of May in 2009, even as he was hitting .299 with a .332 on-base percentage. He hit in the bottom third for much of the next six weeks, posting a .361 on-base percentage to ...

Much of the talks were about him being in a contract year and the chances of him being back in Boston next year. Ellsbury's career thus far is full of ups and downs. He came in during the 07 playoffs, took over for Coco Crisp, and helped the Red Sox win a World Series. He had two solid seasons in 08 and 09 stealing 50 and 70 bases respectively and showing off his great speed in center field. Red Sox fans looked at him as the next great thing for the Red Sox, he also looked like the lead off hitter for the Sox for a long time. In 2010 Ellsbury collided with Adrian Beltre, broke his ribs, and was only able to play in 18 games. This brought up a lot of questions about Ellsbury's toughness and brought a lot of questions about his future with Boston. Ellsbury came back in 2011 and had the best year of his career hitting .321 with 32 HR, 105 RBI, and 39 stolen bases. He also finished second in the MVP voting and immediately was considered one of the best outfielders in the league, and had just entered his prime. With a historic collapse of the Red Sox and another injury plagued season in 2012, there was a lot of talk of trading Ellsbury at the end of the 2012 season. Many thought if he was not traded, he would walk once he was a free agent after the 2013 season. The 2013 season ...

It is very hard to pull for the guy when he is the lead off hitter and he can not get on base. Should Farrell bat him in the lower third of the order? Should they try and trade him for whatever he might be worth? Or just stick it out? I understand that it is still relatively early in the season, but, from what I can see he is way off at the plate and I am noticing a bit of a problem with him throwing from the outfield. Has anyone else noticed the double pumps and looks of uncertainty when he throws back into the infield, especially when runners are on base? Supporting Lackey as the offensive star of the game was Dustin Pedroia with two hits (including his second home run) and three runs batted in. As a Sox fan one would have to hope that when John Farrell talked about giving all his regulars at least one day off before the Sox have their next scheduled break on June 3 rd that he was going to exclude Pedey – who is swinging a hot bat right now as he creeps up on the league leaders in batting average. One individual who Farrell did rest today was Jacoby Ellsbury. Farrell was wise to give Ellsbury a breather given that his centerfielder had yet to miss a game this season, the club was facing a left-hander, and Ellsbury has been scuffling along this year – his upcoming free agency weigh ...
