WASHINGTON -- Washingtonians are used to presidential motorcades snarling afternoon traffic but an Elephant? Now that is something new! That's exactly what happened yesterday afternoon on Connecticut Avenue as Bozie the painting Elephant completed her 1,100-mile journey from the Baton Rouge Zoo to Washingtonian's Smithsonian National Zoo. The Washington Post has the story behind the top-secret pachyderm procession, which zoo officials managed to keep under wraps until the home stretch. [A]s the small motorcade, which included a chase car, weaved through the afternoon traffic with lights flashing, a long, mysterious object curled out the back window of the truck. It was the trunk of an Elephant. Cover blown. Bozie will be kept in quarantine for around a month before joining the rest of the National Zoo's herd: females Ambika (65) and Shanthi (38), and male Kandula (11). They say an Elephant never forgets, so one of 37-year-old Bozie's new cohorts should be familiar: According to the zoo , Bozie and Shanthi were young calves together at Sri Lanka's Elephant Orphanage Department of Wildlife Conservation before being transported to the United States. While living at the Baton Rouge Zoo, Bozie gained acclaim as a painter (alongside longtime partner Judy, who died in March). The National Zoo has a new resident—Bozie, a 37-year-old Asian Elephant, arrived yesterday after traveling 1,100 miles from Baton Rouge. Bozie will join Ambika, who is 65, Shanthi, 38, and Kandula, 11, in the zoo's new $56 million Elephant Trails exhibit, where the four elephants will be able to socialize, train and play. It will be a homecoming of sorts for Bozie, who briefly lived alongside Shanthi while in captivity in Sri Lanka. Zoo officials say 37-year-old Bozie arrived Wednesday. She traveled by truck more than 1,100 miles from her old home at the Baton Rouge Zoo in Louisiana. Bozie's only other companion died in Baton Rouge in March. After a standard 30-day quarantine, Bozie will join three other elephants in Washington. Currently on display in London Covent Garden are two multi-coloured crocheted elephants by NYC Street artist Olek . The Elephant Family – an initiative that aims to protect Asian elephants and their habitat – enlisted the help of a host of leading artists, designers, photographers and creatives like Christian Lacroix, Matthew Williamson, Mario Testino, Missoni, Fabergé, Cartier to participate in their charity event named the Animal Ball at the Lancaster House. Artists have been tasked to create a bespoke pair of masks that reflect their interpretation of an endangered animal, as well as bespoke Elephant sculptures that will be auctioned for charity on 9 July. The 37-year-old Asian Elephant, whose transfer from Baton Rouge Zoo was announced earlier this month, arrived safe and sound at the National Zoo today after traveling in a truck for more than 1,100 miles. Baton Rogue decided to loan Bozie to another institution recently after her Elephant friend, Judy, died of chronic gastrointestinal irritation from arthritis medication in March. Bozie had lived at the Baton Rogue Zoo since 1998, but had to go because female elephants need companionship to stay happy and healthy, said Zoo officials. Bozie will join the National Zoo’s other three Asian elephants —Ambika, Kandula and Shanti (who, incidentally, lived with Bozie in Sri Lanka at an Elephant orphanage before both were transported to North America)—in their newly-renovated Elephant Trails Habitat after she goes into quarantine for a minimum of 30 days, per standard procedure. The National Zoo is regarded as a leader in Elephant research, particularly on Asian elephants (whose population has dropped at least 50 percent over three generations to around 40,000, according to the IUCN Red List ), so Bozie should be in good hands with the Zoo’s Elephant keepers, nutritionists and veterinarians.
