During the launch of the Ford Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost, multiple outlets ran articles parroting Ford’s PR line about the lack of an automatic transmission . Apparently, Ford declined to offer an automatic or Powershift dual-clutch gearbox on the 3-cylinder Fiesta since a two-pedal option would run counter to the 1.0L’s stated mission of being both fun to drive and good on gas. Not so, says a supplier source. According to them, there were plans to offer such a combination, but the combo was axed due to “customer expectations” not being met. What does that mean? The performance, ride and NVH characteristics were far below what was considered acceptable, and therefore the decision was made to offer the 3-cylinder with 3-pedals, and no fewer. ...

I think it is an unfortunate internet byproduct that we post more often when there is a negative issue or we want to change something. I thought it may help someone searching for information as to how a box-stock EcoBoost works in the real world. I bought my 2012 F150 4X4 Screw new in March of 2012 and it replaced a 2009 6.4 diesel F250. It is a Lariat with the max tow package that includes the 3.73 gears. The ride quality is head and shoulders above the F250 and to my surprise, it is actually more user friendly to tow with than the F250 was. It has the electric locking rear which is great in situations like backing the camper into a wet grassy area that you dont want to tear up. I live in PA where nothing is flat so you are always going up and down hill. When not towing it gets an average of around 18 MPG in these areas compared to my old 6.4 that got 11 in the same area with the 3.55 gears it had. On the highway, getting 20 or even better is not uncommon. I recently got an opportunity to get a non-running 85 Merkur to restore so I used the F150 to haul it home. Again, it just reinforced the joy the EcoBoost is to tow with. I think the most I ever had on the trailer was around 9500 pounds. The way it climbed hills with that weight on it made me forget the diesel. The built in digital electric brake controller made it a breeze to quickly get the brakes set with the weight so the trailer stopped smoothly with no wheels sliding. I only ...

By Larry Edsall At least one aspect of Ford's EcoBoost engine is a bust, according to a lawsuit filed by three vehicle owners, Automotive News reports . The suit, filed by three vehicle owners in U.S. District Court in Columbus, Ohio, contends the EcoBoost 3.5-liter V-6 engine can misfire and rapidly lose power because of moisture in the intercooler. The suit contends the problem can effect all EcoBoost engines — two of the plaintiffs own a Taurus SHO and one has an F-150 pickup — and that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received dozens of complaints. The suit also contends Ford knew about the shuddering and stalling issue, and has sent dealers several technical service bulletins suggesting potential repairs. Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine. Three vehicle owners, a married couple and one other person, are suing Ford due to what they call serious “design, manufacturing, or assembly defects” in the company’s 3.5-liter V-6 EcoBoost engine. According to the plaintiffs, the defects have caused their vehicles, a 2010 Taurus in the couple’s case and a F-150 in the other, “to shake, misfire and rapidly lose power,” according to a report from Automotive News. The suit states that the problems, which have occurred at highway speeds, are caused by moisture buildup in the engines’ intercooler. Though the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration hasn’t opened an investigation and Ford hasn’t held any recalls on the engine, the lawsuit states that the NHTSA has received nearly 100 complaints about the EcoBoost engine. The suit alleges that Ford knew about the problem because it notified dealers of the problem and published materials for technicians.
