Chuck Grassley's chief of staff, began looking at the race late last month ; now, he's reportedly submitted his resignation and plans to announce "very soon." Amusingly, he has one of the tiniest favorability scores I've ever seen. Quinnipiac has, for the first time, started polling Iowa , and while they don't have any head-to-heads, they did ask about various potential candidates' name recognition. Young clocks in with 3 percent favorable 2 percent unfavorable! Democrat Bruce Braley is by far the best known of the bunch (all the rests were Republicans), with a 27-14 score, though that means he's still mostly un known. 10:07 AM PT : IA-Gov : As part of its new Iowa polling, Quinnipiac also took a quick look at GOP Gov. Terry Branstad, who sports a pretty solid 49-31 job approval rating. Despite those numbers, though, 43 percent of voters say Branstad does not deserve to be re-elected, versus 42 percent who say he does. Those figures are split almost identically along party lines, with independents 50-50 on the question. (There were no head-to-heads with potential Democratic opponents.) 10:30 AM PT : AL-01 : In the wake of GOP Rep. Jo Bonner's surprise resignation announcement Thursday, the interest level ...

Tom Tancredo, whose maximally anti-immigrant zealotry makes him exactly who the Colorado GOP does not want as their standard-bearer, just declared that he's going to make a second run for governor. I admit I'm surprised at this turn of events, since Tancredo only first publicly mooted the idea last week , and even he said that he wasn't seriously considering the race. But Tancredo says he was motivated by Gov. John Hickenlooper's decision to temporarily stay the execution of a convicted murderer, as well as new gun safety legislation signed into law earlier this year. It's immigration, though, where Tancredo has always shined brightest , and even if he doesn't capture the Republican nomination, he's very likely to pull the entire field rightward on the issue. That would be dangerous for whomever emerges with the brass ring. So far, the only other contender is Steve Laffey, the former mayor of Cranston, Rhode Island (yeah), though Secretary of State Scott Gessler may enter soon, too. Enjoy fending off Tom Tancredo, fellas. ...

The unrest comes the day after an opposition protest during which the government says one person was killed and at least ten were injured. The opposition puts the death toll at four and says dozens were injured. The main opposition parties accuse the government of trying to rig upcoming ELECTIONS, and say they will not take part in the polls scheduled for June 30. Opposition protestors once again clashed with security forces in Conakry Thursday. The protests, and the subsequent violence, have become a weekly event since the government announced the new poll date in mid-April. Monday was the last day for candidates to sign up for legislative ELECTIONS. Several key opposition parties did not put forward any candidates, saying to put their names on the list would have validated the poll date. ...

After scouring the data, here are some of the most interesting things I found. 1. Mitt Romney did worse with Democrats than any other GOP nominee since exit polling began It turns out that Democrats weren't very fond of the "Massachusetts Moderate". Here's how each GOP nominee has fared with Democratic voters over the past 36 years. 2012: Mitt Romney 7% 2008: John McCain 10% 2004 : George W. Bush 11% 2000 : George W. Bush 11% 1996: Bob Dole 10% 1992: George H.W. Bush 10% 1988: George H.W. Bush 17% 1984 : Ronald Reagan 26% 1980: Ronald Reagan 27% 1976: Gerald Ford 20% Visually. I continue to think Rick Santorum would have been utterly obliterated in a 2012 general election, but honestly, would he have done too much worse with Democrats than Romney? Probably not, but that doesn't mean he was as electable as Romney. Independents probably wouldn't have given him a 5% win as they gave to Romney. One more thing -- as you can see, self-described Democrats have apparently grown considerably more partisan over the years. Ford won 20% of them, and Reagan hit 26% and 27% with them. So what's going on? Well, there's a chance that many former Democrats are now calling themselves "independent", and that ...

City of London Elections 2013: the battle, the count, the lessons
