ARLINGTON, Texas -- Miguel Cabrera isn't one to pat himself on the back. Rarely will he praise himself for individual accolades -- regardless of how extraordinary they may be. It's all about the "W" to Cabrera. No win? No celebrating. His teammates are well aware of his humbleness. So they'll gladly do what Cabrera won't -- remind anyone and everyone about his greatness. Here's reaction from a handful of Cabrera's teammates, his manager and other Major League players following his three-homer performance Sunday night . Torii Hunter Torii Hunter, OF "I've been playing a long time -- I've got to say, he's the best hitter I've ever seen. It's fun watching him hit. I know we've got the loss and he'll tell you that he doesn't care what he did today, he cares about the win. But at the same time, individually, pretty impressive. He could've won this game by himself. "From what I've seen, this guy is the best hitter in the game. From my eyes. It's everything. The guy today, (Tanner) Scheppers, his ball was moving like crazy. He made one mistake and Cabrera made him pay for it. Not too many hitters can do that. You throw down the middle with a two-seamer, some guys hit a hard ground ball, but Cabrera hits a home run. It kinda shocked me. My hair st ...

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Monday, May 20, 2013
Last Week: 3-4 This Week: at Cle (5/21-22); MIN (5/23-26) So, What Happened? Toto, I don't think the Tigers are playing Houston anymore. The Tigers are 6-1 against the Astros , and 23-19 overall. MMM will save you the math. That's 17-18 against the rest of baseball. Not ridiculous, but maybe a little troubling? Last week was a microcosm of sorts. The Tigers went 2-1 against Houston, 1-3 against the rest of baseball. Correction — the best of baseball. Gee, those Texas Rangers can hit, eh? The Rangers looked at the Tigers' glorified starting rotation and gave it a Texas-sized laugh. The Rangers scored 29 runs against our boys last weekend, and that's numbing considering Justin Verlander , Anibal Sanchez and Doug Fister combined to pitch about 11 innings in their starts. That's impressive hitting. Before the horrid weekend in Texas, the Tigers beat down the Astros twice more before finally losing to Houston on Wednesday afternoon, when the 'Stros managed two runs in the top of the ninth to win, 7-5. Oh, and some guy named Cabrera hit three home runs on Sunday night, each more impressive than the previous one. The Tigers still lost in one of the most frustrating games MMM has ever watched. To make matters worse, the Tigers fell out of first place. The (gulp) Cleveland Indians are in the catbird's seat, by two games. Hero of the Week MMM was struck by something FSD's Rod Allen said during a recent broadcast. Allen said he ...

Mandatory Credit: Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sport The Detroit Tigers, after losing to the Texas Rangers on Sunday despite a three homer day by Miguel Cabrera , stand at 23-19 on the season. That’s 89-win pace which would (should) be just fine for postseason inclusion. But if we only include games against the subset of baseball teams that aren’t the Houston Astros, their record is 17-18. That’s decidedly less than 89 win pace. Some might look at that non-Astros record and decide to hit the panic button – especially since the Tigers have lost eight of their last twelve games – but it’s really a meaning less fact. I mean, it’s funny to look at because the Astros are so bad they shouldn’t count (LOLz), but the Astros aren’t really so bad they shouldn’t count. Detroit should (and will) perform better against some of the (other) good teams in the American League, but beating the really bad teams (and beating them soundly) does also count. It counts for both (a) their overall W-L record and (b) learning something about their true talent level. The Detroit Tigers haven’t always played great baseball this season, but they’ve mostly played good baseball, and they’re pretty much right on track record-wise. AP Photo ARLINGTON, Texas -- Detroit relied heavily on its bullpen in Texas, so help was needed. That help will come from right-hander Luke Putkonen, who will be recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday before the Tigers' series opener in Cleveland. To make room for Putkonen, the team optioned right-hander Evan Reed back to Toledo. "He didn't do anything wrong, but Putkonen didn't have enough days at Triple-A and now he will," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. The move to recall Pukonen couldn't be made prior to Tuesday's game because he was required to spend at least 10 days in the minors after being optioned. It's the second major-league stint this season for Putkonen, who was sent to Triple-A Toledo on May 10 to clear space on the 25-man roster for Phil Coke. Putkonen made two appearances for the Tigers in his first stint, pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out four. He was 1-0 with a 1.96 ERA in Toledo. Reed made two appearances for the Tigers, giving up one run and four hits over four innings. He struck out one and didn't issue a walk. "I was happy that I attacked hitters and did my job when I came in," Reed said. "Obviously, it's disappointi ...

That honor belongs to the guys that have won two of three from them in the first three of the series; the Texas Rangers . There seems to be a simple formula for the Tigers to beat the Rangers. We’ll see if they can do these few things Sunday night and salvage a series split. To begin with they are going to need to score a few more runs. The only game of the series they won is the only game the Rangers didn’t put a football score on them. This Tigers team is supposed to be a powerful line-up and they are. Still they seem to have met their match in the stellar pitching staff of the Rangers. That brings us to the next thing the Tigers will need to do. They need to pitch better. The game when they held the Rangers to one run is the one that were victorious in. It isn’t a big mystery. They need to score more runs than the Rangers if they hope to beat them. They have not shown the ability to score more than a run or two against them so they will need Doug Fister to throw a shutout or nearly one to split the series. Of course it is possible for Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder to show out and throw some runs on the scoreboard but the Rangers seem to have their number. At least the Tigers know who they do not wa ...

Torii Hunter is treated to a No. 1 star for his two-hit showing that included an RBI double in the third. His extra-base hit snapped an 0-for-15 slide and scored Avisail Garcia to put the Tigers on the board. Hunter came around to score two batters later on Prince Fielder's single to left. The two-hit performance raised his batting average to .313. Drew Smyly SECOND STAR: DREW SMYLY It might've just been mop-up duty, but Drew Smyly's relief appearance Saturday was big, simply because it saved Detroit's bullpen. A day after picking up a hold in two-thirds of an inning, Smyly was called on again to relieve Anibal Sanchez in the third. He went on to throw 3 1/3 innings of one-run ball. He gave up two hits and one walk, but struck out two and halted the Rangers' early hit-fest. His ERA climbed from 1.82 to 1.96, but he continues to be one of the most reliable relievers in Detroit's bullpen. Phil Coke THIRD STAR: PHIL COKE It was an encouraging appearance for Phil Coke, who worked the final two innings Saturday and didn't allow a run. Finding qualified topics to blog about in 2-inning snapshots, enlightening commentary from Jim Price , and Lynn Henning columns is a challenge; finding the time to compose compounds the dilemma. I have taken to jotting notes down in an effort to deliver some meaningful observations to readers – so here in free-flow form and no particular order is a Byrne’s-eye review of the past week. Feel free to agree or disagree in the Comments section. - Brayan Pena is looking like a tremendous acquisition as backup catcher. I was surprised when I found out Pena is a career .248 hitter – it seemed like he always found a way to get on base when he played in KC – and by glancing at his defensive numbers expected him to be decent behind the dish. Pena has seized each opportunity to start by knocking out some huge hits, and his switch-hitting ability gives the team flexibility. Not uncomfortable at all with him taking some playing time away from the struggling Alex Avila (googling “struggling Alex Avila” y ...

Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports Austin Jackson will still need to remain on the disabled list for about nine more days before he’s eligible to return to action, but the good news out of Detroit is that he’s unlikely to need extra time to recover from his hamstring injury. James Schmehl of MLive has a quote from Jim Leyland to this end: Jackson has been sidelined since May 11 with a strained left hamstring, but he’s “feeling much better,” according to Leyland. “He’s doing good,” he said. “He should be on time.” I think many a Detroit Tigers fan would love to see Don Kelly get the heave-ho when Jackson returns, but it’s much more likely that Avisail Garcia — the Tigers’ most MLB ready outfield prospect — will be sent back to the minor leagues. Garcia has an .875 OPS (with a home run) in eight plate appearances since his recall this season, but the organization is going to want him to get more playing time than he’s going to be able to get with the big club. There’s a (very compelling) argument to be made that he should be starting pretty much everyday in center (instead of platooning with Kelly) right now, but even that argument goes out the window with the eventual return of Jackson. Garcia is (and will be) a better hitter than The Donald, but Kelly is better suited to be t ...

Source: accuscore.com --- Sunday, May 19, 2013
The Texas Rangers are 13-5 at home this season and are solid favorites to beat the Detroit Tigers who are 10-11 on the road this season. The Rangers have a better than 55% chance of winning based on 10,000 game simulations generated one play at a time by the AccuScore Simulation Supercomputer. Rangers' starter Derek Holland is forecasted to have a better game than Tigers' starter Doug Fister. Derek Holland has a 57% chance of having a Quality Start (QS) while Doug Fister has a 47% chance of a QS. If Derek Holland has a quality start the Rangers has a 74% chance of winning. His simulated strikeout to walk ratio is 2.5 and he has a 22% chance of having a 5 to 1 K/BB ratio. When he has a 5/1 ratio the Rangers win 66%. In Doug Fister quality starts the Tigers win 62%. He has a 24% chance of having a 5 to 1 K/BB ratio and if he does his team wins 62% of simulations. In simulations we tracked the batter for each team that was most productive based his average hits, walks and RBI per simulation. The most productive batter for the Texas Rangers is Lance Berkman who averaged 2.27 hits+walks+RBI. He has a 39% chance of having a big game with 3+ Hits, Walks, RBI and if he has a big game the Rangers have a 69% chance of winning. The most productive batter for the Detroit Tigers is Miguel Cabrera who averaged 2.47 hits+walks+RBI. AP Photo ARLINGTON, Texas -- Welcome to the club, Anibal. For the second time in three days, a Tigers starter was rocked by the Texas Rangers and knocked out in the third inning. First, it was Justin Verlander. This time, it was Anibal Sanchez. Sanchez recorded just eight outs and surrendered six runs -- five earned -- before being lifted after only 2 2/3 innings in what was arguably the worst start of his career in a 7-2 loss at Rangers Ballpark. Till now, Sanchez's every move as of late had seemingly resulted in success. He took his pristine 2.05 ERA, best among Detroit's starting pitchers, into his start Saturday, as well as 42 strikeouts, which he racked up over his last four appearances. He had been the Tigers' most consistent, and arguably their best, starting pitcher before his start Saturday. But, as was the case with Verlander earlier this week, Texas didn't blink. The Rangers battered Sanchez for nine hits to deal the Tigers their seventh loss in 11 games and drop them a game behind the division-leading Cleveland Indians. KEY TO THE GAME Unlike Verlander and the seven-run third inning that haunted him Thursday night, there wasn't o ...

Source: www.minorleagueball.com --- Saturday, May 18, 2013
Ok, I am back in service after getting pool chemicals in my eyes earlier this week. So please forgive me for not being as active as I should have been. I am going to try to catch up quick so here we go Detroit Tigers mock draft! I feel that this is a very important draft for the Tigers. The farm system is getting very thin, thanks to the signing of Prince and Victor the Tigers have given up their first round picks the last two year. The trade for Sanchez also removed a couple of top ten prospect from the farm. The Sanchez trade though may be the savior of this draft for two reasons. First the Tiger traded Competive Balance Picks with the Marlins which moved them up from 73 overall to 39 overall and adding pool money. Second by trading for Sanchez, it allowed the Tigers to resign Sanchez without giving up a first round draft pick this year. It turned out to be one of the best moves by a GM all year IMO. My research of what Detroit does in the draft matches up with what Cookiedabookie’s research that he published in his Article "EVERYTHING you wanted to know about how your team drafts **UPDATED**". THANK YOU Cookie. For those of you who have not look at this here is my overview about the Tigers. The Tigers in recent years have almost always draft RHP when they have a first round picks. These picks have been split down the middle between high school and college pitchers. Since 2001, when Dombrowski took over, more than half of the Ti ...
